Read like a children’s book for a large portion of it. Characters seemed unrealistic and I struggled to follow - climactic events happened but I seemed to have missed the build up?
The dated, colonial attitudes presented within mean I struggle to find many redeeming qualities (typically I’m a great believer in allowing characters to be problematic, but this definitely reads like Kingsolver has an agenda).

A chunky novel to fall head first into. The Poisonwood Bible is one of those modern classic books that has been in my peripheral vision for many years. Finally on reading it, I was pulled in from the start with a dark foreboding tone of an unknown tragedy to come for the Price family, as they follow their Baptist preacher father to the Congo in the late 1950s. Alongside the family’s story — told from each woman’s perspective: Orleanna Price and her four daughters Rachel, Leah, Adah and Ruth May - Kingsolver offers glimpses at the Congo’s history, considering beginning and end an Africa free from colonisation.
