Another brilliant fantasy, involving ghostly spirits that attempt to destroy the human world even as humans use the same spirits to attack them, and as a control mechanism.

We're thrown back to the middle ages, a time of religion and chaos when food was scarce, prejudices and superstition underwrote society, and the 'church' were in control, answering to 'The Lady'.

Our heroine has several names in this book, all given to her. She is scarred: physically, mentally, and emotionally, but has a strong will and intelligence, two advantages that will support her through the trials and tribulations she will be forced to undergo to save humanity.

forever longing for the allconsuming feels that An Enchantment of Ravens inspired. Great book, not on the same level :/

Good enough to get me through despite the fact that I had no choice but to read this on my phone because it was a Simon Teen free read. The Revenant is a great character and very charming, and honestly a standalone in a world of duologies and trilogies is very refreshing these days.

I've thought about it and I'm changing my rating from 4.5 stars to 5 stars. The more I think about it the more I appreciate it - it was just that good!

I can always count on Margaret Rogerson to write a unique, engaging fantasy that draws me in from the first page. Her latest book (hopefully the first in a series) tells the story of Artemisia, a young woman training to live a life of service as a Gray Sister - a nun who cleanses the spirits from the dead. But the spirits are restless and when an army of dead soldiers attacks the convent she lives in, Artemisia unexpectedly saves the convent and those within it by wielding a powerful spirit trapped within a Saint's Relic. No one is more shocked than Artemisia to discover that she possesses the skill of a Vespertine - a priestess trained to wield a high order spirit - a skill that many believe was lost forever. With danger looming and an army of the dead threatening to destroy her world, Artemisia embarks on a journey that will test her confidence, training, and knowledge of the world she knew.

Atmospheric writing, detailed world-building, and a heroine I wanted to root for - what more could I ask for? I feel that Rogerson's brand of YA fantasy is unique and complex without being overwrought and tedious. This story focused more on the complex relationship between Artemisia and the Relic - which was a wonderful character all on its own. I appreciated that this book was less romance heavy than others in this genre. I was so invested in Artemisia's story that I finished this in one sitting.

So far, this is my favorite Rogerson book to date.

When Artemisia connects herself to a revenant to save her convent, she soon realizes there is more to the dark magic she'd awakened and she's the only one that can find the answers.

...

Honestly... wasn't my favorite book. There were interesting ideas and themes that I liked, the word building was different from what I've seen in a while and I liked that there were no explicit romantic overtones. However, plot and character development felt lagging. I don't know if I'll read the second book.
