The writing is so good in this book. Daphne Elliot is very quickly moving into my top three authors of all time. I'm a dialogue girl and if theres too many descriptions I can get bored but the inner monologues of these characters are so compelling and real I absolutely adore them! It enhances the book in beautiful ways! Owen and Lila's relationship evolved so naturally. I feel like they were acquaintances and then friends snd then in love and it all happened so seamlessly. It felt inevitable that they got together and I love that. At first I was disappointed about the lack of criminal side plot and I didn't know how they werre going to resolve it and then I figured it was going to be a plot line through this entire series and that made more sense so it was actually fine that there wasn't much in this book alone.
Edit: This book was originally 5 stars but I had to deduct a full star because I HATED the way Owen acted towards Cole in the third book. Even as Cole changed and grew he still treated him badly and I couldn’t wrap my head around him being the same person from this book so that really soured my feelings towards Owen. 🥺

I had as much fun listening to it as I did the first time I read it. The story was done in duet narration style, and Aiden Snow and Mollie Stark did a great job at bringing the story to life.
Lila and Owen meet when Owen comes back to his hometown to help get the family lumber mill's financials in order so they can sell it, and one of his brothers hires Lila as his assistant. The physical attraction is instant, but due to the age gap between them, Lila having history with Owen's brother, and both of them already being on the bad side of the town's gossip mill, they decide to ignore it.
I loved the way their relationship developed. How even though they decided to be just friends in the beginning, there was always that chemistry and those little things they would do for each other that showed they cared. Owen was also the ultimate cinnamon roll. Hear me out, yes, he's grumpy af, but when it comes to Lila, he is the ultimate cheerleader. I loved the way he would always build her up and encourage her to follow her dreams. Lila, on the other hand, even though she also wants to leave Lovewell and expand her wings, showed Owen that their little town is not as bad as he thinks.
Quote: “You taught me that we get to create our own futures. That we can grow and heal from the past and chase our dreams. I want to do it with you, as a team, every single day.”

This is the first book in the Maine Lumberjacks series. I really loved Owen and Lila’s story! I had already read books 3 & 4 but because they are interconnected stand alone’s it didn’t take anything away from this book. It had all the things a great book does; banter, spice, laughs and even a little suspense! I especially loved how Owen was so considerate of Lila’s celiac disease and going above and beyond for her. 10/10 recommend!!
I really enjoyed this one. Owen is a great guy! I mean he started off a little rough and really grew into himself as time went on. I love the dynamic between Lila and Owen. This is quite a family. I liked getting a glimpse of each of them and I look forward to their stories.
I listened to this on audio. Aiden Snow is always a pleasure to listen to and Mollie Stark is a new to me narrator and she did a wonderful job.

This was a fun book! I've seen raving reviews for Daphne's other books with some of my friends so I was exited to give her a try! I loved all the family drama and I really liked how even with the drama, Owen and Lila were just so cute and sweet with each other! Lila was such a sweet character to love and I liked Owen's curmudgeonly-ness. Owen's mission to make Lila pizza SENT ME! SO CUTE!

Was I missing other characters stories/ books? I feel like I may have missed a love story for one of Owen's brothers?
ALSO - Excited to see what else is in store with the Maine Lumberjacks series, because SECRET MARRIAGE and EX-WIFE for Gus?! Yes. Please!

DNF @ 60% - I read the momcon series so I knew the Enzo connection but it had been a while since I read it so I didn’t fully remember all the details. And not only does this book tie into the momcon series it also ties into another series that clearly also came before this one called lovewell lumberjacks so I felt like I was missing a bunch of context while reading and it really annoyed me because if the author had just put a blurb at the beginning letting me know this story was interconnected with a previous series I would have just happily read that one first but instead I started reading this one and felt like I was really missing something and sure enough when I looked I realized there was a previous series. I hate that. Also there were some inconsistencies in the story that disrupted the flow a little bit for me. Like how Owen was on the call with Enzo and asked if he could bring someone and even asked for the tickets to the event then Enzo invited Lila and Owen acted like he could care less or like that wasn’t the plan all along? And then did the same thing with the tickets when Beckett offered them.. he acted like it was a random invite and not like he didn’t specifically ask Owen for the ticket hookup? None of these were honestly deal breakers for me but I decided to take a break from the book and maybe come back to it but the farther away I got from it I realized I had zero interest in continuing to read it so I DNF’d it. I also saw the description for the next book and saw that they do end up selling the business and that made me sad and not want to read it that much more so yeah just not the book for me. But I did read the momcon series and liked that one so nothing against the author!!
