I’m so glad that the Hebert brothers are getting their own series!
Caught in the Axe is the quintessential small-town romance, where everyone knows everyone—and everyone gossips. Both of the main characters, Owen and Lila, find themselves back in Lovewell for different reasons, neither particularly happy to be there. Owen has returned to help his family, while Lila is back to save money for grad school.
Thrust together to work on Owen’s family business, a friendship quickly develops between them. This is a 10-year age gap romance, and I love how Daphne Elliot skillfully highlights their differences in age through their interactions and the way they handle the challenges that arise.
Lovewell is such a charming small town, and I can’t wait to read more about the Hebert brothers. And let’s talk about that cliffhanger... thank goodness book two is already out!

So, in preparing to read Gus’s book, I thought I would read this and that it would be fairly quick… not quick so. Overall the story was okay- not great- and to be honest I was REALLY looking forward to it ending.
While I rated it 4/5, I battled really hard because overall it was a 3/5 but I was entertained enough to add an extra point. I think pace is an issue.

Moderate: Misogyny, Sexism, Gaslighting, Injury/Injury detail
Description makes it sound way creepier than it is.
Bostonian and wealthy numbers guy Owen (age 38) goes back to Maine to help sell the family business after embarrassing legal mess caused by his dad, reuniting him with four brothers he grew up with an likely a fifth half-brother he has no interest in seeing.
Local Lila (age 28, but life has aged her beyond that number) — ex of Owen’s half brother — is back in town to town to work whatever jobs she can before going to grad school in NYC. After how the town treated her and her single mom, she’s ready to get out ASAP.
Great intro to their family dynamic. Interesting angle of the “age gap” and ex-of-sibling romance.
1st book I read by author, and it got me hooked on this series and the Lovewell one before it. (Yes, I read the two series out of order.)
