It's only July but I think it's safe to say this is my favourite romance novel of 2022.

3.5 stars rounded up.

I was very cautious diving into this since I knew beforehand about a 3rd act breakup which I personally simply can't stand. But it ended up to be not that awful, I've definitely seen way worse.

This took some time for me to get into and I was quite skeptical about the concept of both Sophie and Amy being into each other almost from page one but the narrative surprised me. While frustrating at times their conflicts were so entertaining.

The thing that convinced me to definitely round this up however was the restaurant atmosphere, I was absolutely immersed.

Holy crap this was good. Like my heart is so full. One, this was a straight up romance novel with a Sapphic relationship. No fade to black, no vague language. Also the entire time you're reading this book, you are rooting for the two of them. I love the dual perspectives. I loved that the moment we open the book, you realize these are two hot dummies who can't figure it out. Tropes on tropes on tropes and I was here for it. This was a delight from beginning to end and I read it super quickly.

I bought this book on a whim and it was a fun restaurant-based romance novel! There isn’t too much depth to it, though there are attempts at it at times, but the characters are decently well rounded and the happy ending felt earned by all. I gave it four stars because it was a fun, light read.

I bought the paperback after seeing a video of the author crying discovering her book for the first time among the shelves at Chapters. I love seeing those videos of new authors who get so emotional. It's adorable. So then knowing it's a Canadian queer author, I wanted to support her.

So far, the sapphic romances always have something missing for me. But I really loved this one as I connected with the two characters and it's the first time the s3x scenes got really hot damn!!!

I specifically connected with Sophie being an ex-Montrealer in love with poutine with a late bi-awakening (in her 30's). It's so nice to see her learning who she is & being her true queerself, with the courage to end a relationship where this part of her wasn't welcome in the open. But also to re-discover her Montreal roots.

With Amy it was that she is a plants lady. But mostly it's how she's processing her grief, after losing her mom from cancer and struggled to have a relationship with her dad (mine was thankfully not an ass like hers). With her restaurant aka her baby, we could see an other aspect of herself. Wanting to pay tribute to her mom, but struggling to make the business work. I wasn't a big fan of the reality show being the magic solution to their financial struggle, but I really appreciate when she let Sophie in and share a part of the burden. I just wish we would have seen more of the reality cooking show aspect, especially the behind the scene.

Those two characters felt real, and it's interesting to see their relationship evolved and get intertwined, becoming true partners professionally/romantically. Also it was adorable to witness those two dummies pinning for each other hard.

I paired my reading with the audio narrated by Chelsea Stephens & Natalie Naudus who both gave life to the MCs and made the reading even more enjoyable.

Overall I really enjoyed this! This is a new author for me, and one new narrator (that of Sophie’s chapters). Sophie was very likable and my favorite of the duo—Amy, while in understandable ways with her relationship and issues with her dad, was frustrating at times. I nearly docked a star for that, but it’s also made very clear by the narrative (and Sophie gets to call her out frequently for it) that Amy is WRONG for being an asshole and making decisions for Sophie and letting her fear hold her back from being together, so that would feel unnecessarily mean, to me.

Despite my frustrations with Amy (especially near the very end) I did like her, and I liked the two of them together. The chemistry was there from the start and their interactions were great. I have also worked in a lot of restaurants, so the whole vibe and setting was familiar and brought back memories (not all of them great lol) but this is a restaurant I would actually probably enjoy working at, which says something.

The cover is so cute too, I’m loving the more artful covers on sapphic stories I’ve been running into lately as I pretty much detest most of the ‘stock photos of women’ ones that are so prevalent. Both narrators were solid, if not slightly lacking in character voices distinctions (for me). I’d def rec this!
