Modern Love, Revised and Updated: True Stories of Love, Loss, and Redemption

A long time back I was really drawn into these "Chicken soup for the teenage souls" series which spoke about the ups and downs of life as experienced by differnt contributors. "Modern Love" follows the same path talking about love seen in it's various forms by contributors during various times of their life. The book fascinated me due to the Netflix series last year- I decided to push back reading it since the series was so well etched in my mind. The book though is a triumph in portions and fizzles outin others. It's a collection of essays published as New York Times columns and the author compiles them and breaks them into 4 sections- Somewhere out there, I think I love you, Holding on Through the curves and Family Matters. These are real life stories so whatever be it's ups or downs, be it pacing in portions or maybe unrelatable at times, I am sure everyone would come out of it with a story which they would carry for a long time. A story which would have touch the right chords. Possibly that's where the book works. My favorites "When Eve and Eve bit the Apple", "Would My Heart outrun it's pursuer?", "You may want to marry my Husband", "DJ's Homeless Mummy", "Rallying to keep the game alive", "Adolescence, without a Roadmap" and possibly favorite for a lot of reviewers "When the Dooran is your Main Man". Overall a must read.
This is a collection of true stories written by different people about their life events. The stories were about love, friendship, loss, family and redemption. I liked many stories in this book but some of them were not according to my taste. It was good read yet it took me a while to complete it.
Since, it is a collection of different stories I think there might be some stories which will appeal to its readers. For me, it was an interesting book. I will recommend it to anyone who like collection of short stories.

This book just captured my heart. I love that there are many different stories of people going through all the trials of love. I highly recommend this book for ANYONE.
"I would explain that human love is a combination of three emotions or impulses: desire, vulnerability, and bravery. Desire makes one feel vulnerable, which then requires one to be brave."

A heartfelt compilation of true love stories that were selected into the famous The New York Times' Modern Love column. This book successfully made me smile, laugh, and tear up in the end.
As a fan of both the column and podcast show, I read this fear of finishing it so soon. Reading this is like getting a glimpse of their life in which they experienced many kinds of love--platonic, family, or romantic. I enjoy almost all of the stories, some more than the others. My favorite is the one that is adapted to the television series, The Race Grows Sweeter Near Its Final Lap. It tells a story about an elderly couple who finds love in a running club.
"Old love is different. In our 70s and 80s, we had been through enough of life's ups and downs to know who we were, and we had learned to compromise. We knew something about death because we had seen loved ones die. The finish line was drawing closer. Why not have one last blossoming of the heart?"
This book is a heartwarming one that we all need during this tough time. Let's spread love, not viruses.

I gave this book a 3, but it should probably be a 4. I have been a faithful reader of Modern Love for many years, so quite a few of these essays we’re familiar to me, making it slightly less special. A couple are even included in the new television series. That being said, the essays are an emotional rollercoaster of love and loss. It was a great book to finish out the year and a good reminder to be grateful for the love in our lives.
This is one of the best nonfiction books I’ve ever read. I’m fascinated by love stories of all kinds, and this book really is inspired by modern love. It’s true stories (that are apparently based off a podcast) which are all written about people’s real experiences with love. And not just romantic love, but the love of a parent, a child, and not even all the good - but all the bad and the ugly and the heartbreak too. These stories are divided into sections: so we get stories specifically about first loves, heartbreaks, family, serious illness, divorce, adopting children, just all kinds of very interesting topics are covered in this collection of stories.
Some of these stories were skippable and forgettable for me, but some of them actually made me cry???? and some of them were just fascinating and really incredible stories. My personal favorite story in this entire collection is The Race Grows Sweeter Near It’s Final Lap I fucking cried and it was the sweetest thing I’ve ever read. Some of my other favorites were: Now I Need A Place to Hide Away and You May Want to Marry My Husband
Some other stories that I found absolutely fascinating were: My Husbands is Now My Wife which is about a woman who was married to a man for eight years when he finally told her he is a woman, and begins his transition. Another very interesting story was: First I Met My Children, The My Girlfriend. They’re Related about a guy who met his biological children after being a sperm donor in the 90’s, and finding his future wife through those kids.
Overall, this was a very interesting and enjoyable collection of short stories of modern love - and I love that all kinds of love are explored in this, not just romantic love. I’m not usually a huge fan of short stories or nonfiction but I’m a huge lover of romance and love so I think that’s why I ended up enjoying it so much, plus there was just so many relatable quotes like the one below:
”For some reason I’ve always been susceptible to thinking my life would be vastly improved by the solution of a single problem. In high school, I thought, it will all get better when the braces come off, or when my skin clears up or when I go to college.
And now, older and supposedly wiser, I find myself thinking it will all get better when I find romance. When I have a man who wants me despite how fallible, loud, or political I can be. Someone who, with a kiss, can snap me out of my self-pitying reverie. I think about how long I’ve been ready to find the beauty in another human being, to caress the scars of someone as flawed as me and to feel that person reciprocate.”

I very rarely give anthologies five stars but this one just grabbed me.
There were some duds of course and I got physically angry at one story but there were some gems I this books that will stick with me for a long time.

3.5 stars.
didn't really love the first 1/3 of this - I didn't feel connected to the stories & found them just okay - but the rest was great! would recommend!

Based on the NPR podcast and the New York Times column, MODERN LOVE encompasses 42 short stories written by real people, telling their real love stories. Many of these are the popular stories you may have read or listened to in the past fifteen years, and some are the ones you may have seen in the Amazon series featuring Tina Fey, Andy Garcia, Dev Patel, and Anne Hathaway.
This book is short, and a super quick read. It’s a perfect pick if you are having a really busy week and only have short periods of time to read. The only thing I would advise against is reading large portions of this book in one sitting. I made the mistake of reading 10 stories or so at a time and they didn’t feel quite as special that way. Regardless, these stories are fantastic and make us feel lucky to experience the feeling of love.
