I wanted to like this so badly. The idea and the premise sounded right up my alley and I was sure I would love it.

The idea was great but the execution felt so clunky. The dialogue felt unnatural, the motives and actions of most of the characters felt... weird and forced? Crier and Ayla's thoughts would be explored for pages and pages at a time, to the point that it got boring, and even having absorbed all their thoughts, I still didn't feel sympathy or understanding for most of their actions. The pacing felt off everywhere, the actions leading in to the drama made no sense to me. I constantly felt "but why??" or "huh??" going through my brain.

Maybe it was just me and I had a problem immersing in to the text for some reason. Hoping this was just a badly placed foothold for a fantastic 2nd book.

I tried so hard, but the writing style just doesn't work for me at all. I can't connect with the characters whose decisions make no sense to me

Amazing, I am speechless and I am not even a fan of the fantasy genre (in the sense that I have not yet looked much into it).

This had me absolutely HOOKED!
Cannot wait to start reading Iron Heart.

2 stars, and that's being generous. sad to say, as this was my favorite book three years ago, but crier's war didn't do it for me.

it felt very lukewarm, from the writing, through the world, and to the characters. individually, none of the aspects were terrible enough to make me give such a low rating. but together, they make for a very unsatisfying book.

i think the characters are the ones who suffered the most. they just don't feel realistic. their motivations are dealt with in such an odd way. the all-power villains don't feel threatening. the political intrigue isn't intriguing. the stakes feel made-up and the actions don't have any real consequences (at least not the actions of the mcs. why punish the mcs when there are servants that could be used as an example.)

it's a shame, because the world and the characters could be interesting—keyword being could be. there's a good premise somewhere in there, but that's about it.

I immediately had to buy the sequel after that ending. I absolutely loved it, and I couldn’t put it down.
