let me start this by saying i probably would have loved this more if i read it when i added it to my tbr 4 years ago. that being said, it was still pretty solid!

i find the concept of humans against automae very interesting, it dives more into fantasy than it does with sci-fi which i think is a missed opportunity but as i was reading, i think i understand what the author was trying to convey with her characters so i'm not too mad

i think the real problem that this book has is the pacing. we sort of get two different ones and none are really what they should be. the plot almost feels to slow at times, i believe we could have reached some of these plot points (and even crier's thoughts) way sooner than they happened, even if the book was always supposed to be part of a duology. in comparison, the love story appeared way too quickly in the storyline, especially as i've seen it being described as enemies to lovers.
sure the girls start on two opposite sides of the revolution, yet it almost feels insta-lovey when they meet, to the point where it feels like ayla completely loses the focus of her revenge.
especially in that one scene where she decides she's going to kill crier, it would have hit so much more if we didn't go through this whole phase of i have feelings for her like 3 pages after meeting her

the second half of the book allowed the relationship to be a bit more developed but it was really lacking cohesion in the first part.

i will be reading the sequel because i'm interested enough to know how this ends (even if i can kind of guess) but happy for the lesbians i love crier and ayla they're very neat girls

The romance plot felt under cooked… which is a bummer bc it had all the ingredients to make it really intriguing, but it all felt so surface level, and bc that’s such a big plot point of the book, it affected my overall opinion of the book. I don’t regret reading it, and I’ll probably read the next one, but I think there were some annoying flaws (namely a superficial romance that then dictated the rest of the plot while still feeling superficial? That kinda pmo)

need a love like theirs so bad
