Fffff now I have to wait for Jim Butcher to write more.

Seventeen books in, maintaining internal consistency is really starting to pose a problem for the author. Which reflects the really strong cast of characters he has populated this world with, and how good the secondary characters have become, that maintaining their internal story arcs becomes as important to the reader as maintaining Dresden's. There are some frustrating failings in that, here. Peace Talks and Battle Ground are two books that aren't quite two books-- they're more than one, but the arc in Peace Talks isn't resolved adequately in Battle Ground, and the new plots we have to chase in Battle Ground outnumber the few we put to bed.

On the other hand, elements of the stories continue to be genre-best. Putting out the silver for guests? Perfect, and just tossed in at the end as if by accident. Hopefully as the cast is reorienting the organization will be more disciplined.

I do still very much enjoy these books.

Personal problem: I got bogged in the big, epic battle. It's written well, but fight scenes don't engage my brain easily, and there are a lot of those here; I do the same style of conking out when I try to watch Marvelverse movies. It took me most of the time since this book's release to get through all the action. There's always a significant dose, but I like Harry best when he's weighing good and evil and what's worth defending and what's worth sacrifice and how to define one's identity.

But this volume takes the story where it's going - very few complaints but personal taste for where my imagination spends its time.

Battle Ground, seventeenth in Jim Butcher's Dresden Files series, takes place almost entirely in a single night of supernatural battle in Chicago. If you're a fan of the cinematic battle scenes in this series, then this is definitely for you. Lots of heroics, lots of dying, lots of magic and bullets flying. Reminds me of Avengers:Endgame, right down to the moment of "hero-stands-alone then an army comes to help", which was probably intentional given Butcher's fondness for pop culture references. And lots of shifts in personal and political alliances for Harry, as one would expect given the size of the battle. I enjoyed it as much as any of the series, not least because of all those shifts, which bodes well for future stories feeling less repetitive.

Battle ground was really nice, a permanent shift to the story. These major shifts seem to be happening more and more often as the series progresses. Excited to see how it all ends.

I'm reallllll mad at this book. For obvious reasons once you read it, but I won't spoiler it. No. I hate when authors do that. I'm a huge fan of this series, but NO. Refuse to accept THAT.

In the top 2 dresden files books in the series so far. I LOVED this book, all the feels! The city is under attack, Mab, Tatiana, Murphy, Molly and Dresden come out to defend it. Thousands will die, and a titan will fall.

Amazing stuff. Possibly best book of the year (so far)

3.5
well....that was rude.
I'm hoping that as harry stops being such a 'young wizard', he will stop objectifying women. that is my biggest beef with these. learn to control your damn hormones and quit objectifying.

I am emotionally wrung out after finishing this book. It’s a rough ride indeed.

In theory an entire book filled with battle sequences would hype me up to the moon(it did), but in reality too much action can get repetitive(it did). While I love the plot events that occured in the book except that particular one, the constant repetitve battles really made me lose focus sometimes. Even so, the avenger endgame like moments were really cool, and the full consequences of the events are to be seen in the future.
