This was interesting. I would have liked more world building and more character development. I look forward to reading the next book to see where things will be going next!

I loved Pippa's original Veil series and was not disappointed by this book either. I like that you are never quite sure about the motivation/honesty of some characters and can't wait to see how the story continues or how Gem's character develops.

Pippa's writing is captivating, her characters are well rounded and the plot draws you in. I find it difficult to put these books down. They are so unlike other books I have read but in the very best of ways.

I'm going to read The Veil series first and come back to this. Didn't realize it was first.

Another great urban fantasy book by Pippa DaCosta, but holy smokes was it complicated. Everything was back and forth, the characters caught in situations that went from bad to worst to catastrophic, all of it leading to a wicked climax, a shocking twist, and an ominous set up. I really really liked the story and found myself fairly sympathetic toward Gem and her choices––and the fact that she had none, and was only trying to do the right thing. At times she frustrated me, especially given her treatment of her supposed ally Torrent, but the more I think about it, the more I understand why she acted the way she did. She's a demon, and demons aren't exactly heroes. Still, the action was intense and she's a strong character, and the ending leaves so many possibilities. I don't know what she's going to do or how the other characters will react when she returns for her retribution. But I do know it's going to be awesome!

A Gripping Start To This Demonic Trilogy

I bought Chaos Rises for my Kindle but also downloaded the Audible version because it was offered at a reduced rate. I alternated between reading the kindle version and listening to the story on Audible, which is becoming my favourite way to “read” a book.

I am already a fan of Ms DaCosta’s books; I find her writing style intelligent, engaging and very easy to read. I like how she paces her plots and the balance of tension, mystery and action she uses. As a narrated book, I was impressed with Hollie Jackson's performance; loving the pace at which she read the story and her tonal adjustments for the dialogue. I would definitely buy books narrated by her in the future.

Chaos Rises has everything that I look for in a 5star book; it's well written with a huge amount of twists and turns that kept me guessing throughout this action packed, emotional roller-coaster of an urban fantasy tale!

Due to the graphic violence and sexual/dark themes, I'd recommend Chaos Rises to adults who are not offended by content of this nature who are fans of urban fantasy adventures with gritty story-lines and lots of action.

4.5 'Icy' Stars

I loved this book.I honestly didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. This was my first book by Pippa DaCosta. Though it's a spin-off of the Veil series, you won't be confused.

The story gives us the world after the Fall, when the veil opened and the demons surged through from the netherworld creating chaos and destruction.Nothing is the same and the change is shown brilliantly in the story.

The world created in this book was what had me going at the start.I loved the fact that the demons had elemental powers and how they were different from the stories I had read before.

And the characters...

I liked Gem,though at times I couldn't help but shake her senseless and say,"WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" :)
The struggle she felt in controlling her demon felt real and her determination to find her brother was admiring.
I would have loved to see Del,Gem's brother, more and know his side of the story.
And well Torrent,I don't know what to say about that guy. This character confused me but there were parts in the story where I felt his pain.

And can we just talk about Li'el,the Prince of Pride??

I honestly loved him.He is by far probably my favorite character in this book, second to Gem.I would LOVE.......... to see more of him.I am hoping that we will more of him in the next book (after that ENDING........!!).(Fingers crossed.)

Chaos Rises is a perfect blend of action and intrigue that will leave you waiting for the next one.

I can't wait for CHAOS UNLEASHED....!!

The cover for CHAOS RISES really drew my attention so I read what it was about and realized it was a spinoff of another of Pippa's series and decided I really wanted to get the full spectrum and read The Veil series before diving into CHAOS RISES. So, I read all 5 of the Veil Series books, really enjoyed them and finally started reading CHAOS RISES.

When I read all of CHAOS RISES and put it down, I just didn't get the same gotta read the next book feeling I was hoping for. I liked Gem just fine and I really loved seeing one of the characters—The Prince of Pride— from The Veil series, but the storyline just didn't reel me in. Just to be completely clear, I didn't hate CHAOS RISES, I just didn't love it or like it as much as I did The Veil series. Maybe I shouldn't have read The Veil series before jumping in. Maybe if I didn't love Muse and her crew so much I wouldn't have done so many comparisons. I just don't know.

Another small thing, I really wanted to see Muse and/or Stefan make an appearance. I know it wasn't their book, but I really wanted them to make an appearance at least once. I kept looking for them and they never came *Sad Face*.

I can't say 100% yet if I will pick up book two when it's available. On one hand, there is a lot of room for this series to grow into something I might love and I really liked the The Prince of Pride in The Veil series and wouldn't mind reading more about him. Then there is the other hand where I didn't love CHAOS RISES and found it a bit slow. Only time will tell, but I MIGHT give it a try.

Ahh, to be back in The Veil world; where demons are sexy and sly and every deed is self-serving. Oh, Veil world, how I’ve missed you!

Hiding out from the Institute, Half-bloods Gem and Del seek refuge with the demon Allard. In exchange for their care and protection, they do “jobs” for him. Jobs that no-one else in their right mind would risk. But when you are dealing with a demon, not all things are as they seem. When one job goes very, very wrong and her brother, Del, disappears, Gem needs to needs to decide to what lengths she will go to get her brother back.

In true Pippa DaCosta fashion, Chaos Rises is action packed and filled with characters you love to hate and hate to love. Duplicity reigns in the new world after The Veil and deciding who to trust is tricky. While I loved Gem (even if she was a bit naive and rash), my true favorite was Torrent, a hottie half-blood water elemental with mad crossbow skills who can shift to have a tail. A TAIL. *sigh*

*don’t judge me people*

While it is possible to read this as a separate series, I really recommend you read The Veil series first. Especially if you have plans to read it at some point. The events in this book/series take place directly after the events in that series and, as such, contain spoilers to what happens in the conclusion of that series.

As for me, I can’t wait to see where the next book take us. Because that ending. Heck yeah! I freakin’ loved that ending!

There was a lot going on in CHAOS RISES that happened prior to the start of this story that isn’t fleshed out too great. A lot to do with The Institute and how it created Gem and Del to be these creatures that killed demons but they escaped. It’s always this looming Big Bad that’s haunting them on top of the Big Bad of the moment that the current story is dealing with. Plus the whole Fall. The veil breached six months prior? The supernatural world bled through to the living one and demons are living among people, concentrated in areas called the nw-zones that people avoid. It was annoying because the book kept talking at me as if these things were things I already knew so it was short on context and it only proved to confuse me.

I’m not sure how I felt about the characters either. They were all pretty crappy and that was continually kind of batted off as them being demons and demons weren’t trustworthy and lied all the time, but it still made them crappy characters. Gem is half demon who’s always struggling to control the demon half of her. But she sells out everyone who gets close to her if she thinks it’ll benefit her in the end, namely to find her brother. It got old when she did it for, like, the third time. She loves her brother and will do literally anything to find him after he’s gone missing, but anything means screwing everyone over. So not too great of a character to follow.

I did like her honesty, though. A moment happens toward the end of the book where Gem allows her demon to surface and she basically revels in the power. She likes it and she’s not all that apologetic about it either. I could really appreciate that.

I didn’t really care for the book. It needed another copy edit. Not the worst I’ve seen, by far. But there were enough missing punctuation and run-on sentences that they stuck with me. The story was just okay. I found myself bored with it pretty early on. Add in the backstory that’s mentioned but not really developed, leaving a gaping hole of context, and the crappy characters doing crappy things (and not just Gem, pretty much every character was out for themselves and worked to screw everyone over to the point where I couldn’t connect with any of them) and there just wasn’t a whole lot for me to like. I won’t be reading on in the series.
