I'm giving this a reluctant 2 stars. It should probably be a 1.5 stars but I bumped it up because of nostalgia (most likely). I have to agree with others who gave this low marks; it seems like it wasn't written by Robert Crais. It also shouldn't really be considered a Cole/Pike book. Yes, they were both it it, but it wasn't really about either one. The story focused so much on the two villains chasing the hard-to-believe-how-stupid-they-were-kids. There was a lot to dislike about this book. I spent a long time waiting for a new Crais book to come out because I love Elvis Cole and Joe Pike so much and I was so let down. I will, by no means, give up on this author and series, but I hope that the next one he releases will be back to style.
The mother of a teenager finds a Rolex watch, bundles of cash and other items in his bedroom and hires private detective Elvis Cole to find out how he got the loot. Cole learns that the teen and two others are behind a string of home burglaries in rich neighborhoods and, one item they stole is very valuable to the owners -- for a reason other than money. It's so important, in fact, that people who get in the way of its recovery are ending up dead.
One of my favorite parts of this book is that the mom sees that something is amiss and does something about it. In other words: She's a parent.

I hate to say it, but this was not Crais’ best work. As a devout reader of Elvis and Pike novels, I was excited to find a new one on the digital shelf. As a detective story, it is going to follow the prescribed arc; unfortunately, this one rarely deviated from the script. Elvis is still the smooth-talking goofball which makes the journey bearable but gone was any of the mystery or suspense. Pike’s involvement was minimal and missed the deeper analysis that makes his character tick. If you’re deep into the series, plug along. If this is your first, skip it.
I always want more Joe Pike, and less Elvis Cole, but that's not what the author wants to do, so here we are.

One of the best writers with compelling heroes. He always pleases.
I can't wait to see his next book.
