French is one of my new favorite authors. This is only her second book and it surpasses the first, which was also a favorite of mine.

A stunning literary mystery. Cassie from In the Woods takes center stage here, dragged from Domestic Violence to Undercover one last time. A young woman the spitting image of Cassie is murdered, but her old partner Frank wants her to assume the young woman's life (as if she were just in a coma and injured rather than dead) to catch the killer. The writing here is breathtaking. I was completely transported.
This book was just as amazing the 2nd time. Everyone should read it!

THE SECRET HISTORY meets Sherlock Holmes. A cozy light academia country-house-share fantasy meets a smart police procedural murder mystery slash undercover operation.
I had minor notes about the unfolding of the investigation (most frustratingly, Cassie overlooks what I thought was an obvious clue for about 100 pages), but I adored the warmth of the delicious moments among the housemates, and whenever Tana chilled us by twisting these warm moments into flashes of terror, I was thrilled. And I was so invested in this group of friends, captivated by them as individuals and obsessed with them as a group.
THE LIKENESS is what I like in a mystery: character-driven, clever, with a captivating setting and a compelling premise, and it’s got Donna Tartt–invoked execution to boot.
