I read this in elementary or middle school (sometime between 2006-2009)and could not remember what it was called, but it definitely stuck with me.

DNF
I was recommended this book by someone who most definitely meant well, but I could not even get a third of the way through. It's a very see-through attempt at Mormon propaganda, and knowing this, I could already not take it very seriously at all. It reads like a lengthy chicken soup for the soul story. It buys into the Satanic Panic of the time and spreads misinformation about AIDS. This book could potentially be helpful for a struggling young Christian preteen, but not anyone else.

Boo this 'serial hoaxer' author.

Such an interesting time capsule to revisit. A powerful memoir.

Please remember when you are reading books by Beatrice Sparks that she tried to pass off fiction as fact. Google her name and find out just how deceptive she was as an author. Nothing she's written is "real."

Such a sad thing to happen to someone so young. Seeing all the ups and downs made you feel close to Nancy. Her quirkiness and strength made you want to keep reading.

When I read this I was in elementary/middle school. It was one of my favorite books; the story really touched me especially considering I was (am)chronically ill (not from HIV/AIDS). Now that I look back on it however, it seems pretty obvious that it was pure fiction written by an adult because it was so sentimental and moralistic (don't have sex before marriage!) Still, I gave it 3 stars for old times sake and the meaning it gave to my life and experience as a kid with a chronic illness.

Spoiler alert

I read this book when I was 13. I was for several years under the impression that this was a diary, published by Nancy’s mother. I truly thought this was based on a true story based on what the author said, or the author come to find out that the author was actually a very well-known serial hooker. This book is not based on a true story and I was incredibly disappointed when I found that out, because what kind of person takes an actual diary and adds a bunch of fake stuff to it and then publishes it for money who does that?

I am finally done with this book. After I had read that it might not be a true story, I stopped reading because I was dissapointed. Still I have finished. It was an okay book, but dont know if I would remember it a year later.
