I had never read a Louis L'Amour book before so I thought it was about time and this is the first book in the Sackett's Series so it seemed a good place to start.

He's most known for his Westerns and from what I understand this series is mostly Western but this particular book follows Barnabas Sackett in England as he goes from a farmer to a trader in the new world having all kinds of adventures, chased by royalty, swashbuckling on the ocean, run ins with Indians (both friendly and not), meeting companions/friends, fighting alongside them and watching some of them die, meeting hot woman that like adventure etc. etc. etc.

I wouldn't call L'Amour a great writer but he IS a great storyteller and if I was in the mood for his particular brand of writing I could see myself reading all of his books.

So why did I only give it 3 stars?
It never really grabbed me. I found it very hard to immerse myself in the world that he created. My mind kept wandering while I was reading the book.

I would recommend this book, this author and this series.
I just don't think it was the right book for me at this time - I liked it but didn't love it.

After SO many years, I’m going to begin to tackle Louis L’Amour’s Sackett Saga. To be honest, this isn’t what I expected. This is an origin story, an exploration tale, but not exactly a western. I know that’s my preconceptions coloring my reading, but there you go.

I LOVE Abigail and am eager to see her to more in the next book.

I am listening to this series on audiobook, and my mind could easily stray from it - otherwise I might have liked it more. When I was in high school over 20 years ago I got to work in a small town library and Zane Gray and Louis L'Amour were very popular authors. For a long period of my life I have avoided the Western genre but as I learn more about it I'm willing to start reading more about this era of history. Sackett's Land isn't a Western at this point, but more about the beginnings of the family in America and leaving England. I am looking forward to exploring this series and see where it takes me.

I will always love L'Amour's storytelling, but this one is something of a miss for me due to the over-the-top special awesomeness of protagonist Barnabas Sackett. Not only is he more awesome than anyone around him could hope to be, everyone around him (other than the unfairly antagonistic antagonist) tells him over and over just how awesome he is. He of course refutes this humbly as a protagonist should.

It's a fun adventure tale and an ode to the New World and the bravery of its settlers and that part is enjoyable enough, but if L'Amour had dialed back the specialness of his main character, I would have enjoyed it more.

This is technically historical fiction rather than a western as this first book takes place in England and S. Carolina. However, it's the intro to the Sackett family and how they got to the west. Ok, so this is pulp fiction - short on 'round' characters, some difficult to believe events (happening all to the same character), but still enjoyable. L'Amour was always good at giving description as well as focusing on ACTION! I think this was great! If you are 'literary' you would probably hate it.
