While not my favorite of the Dear America series, I really enjoyed this one. Mem is a likable girl and her voice sounded very believable for a twelve year old girl. I love that Dear America chose to have one of their books feature a pilgrim girl because the pilgrims' journey on the Mayflower is an essential part of American history despite the fact that it happened some 150 years before America was founded.
The best part of this book of this book is the beginning when Mem and her family are still on the Mayflower. Not only was it interesting and exciting but also very informative. Unfortunately I felt that the storytelling gradually lost steam once the pilgrims reached the New World. By the end of the book it seemed like Mem had very little to say. The First Thanksgiving especially was neglected when it should have been a special event for Mem and therefore an important part of the story.
Despite that, I still enjoyed the book and would definitely recommend it.

Kids’ favorite school pick of the year, so far. Mayflower voyage and Plymouth settlement story, complete with heartbreaking details. Plenty of places to fact check and have side bar discussions and research.
This is one of my least favorite of the series. I appreciate that the author doesn't have a ton to work with, but this book honestly drags. The historical accuracy is somewhat lacking compared to later books in the series. I think A Journey to the New World can be a great springboard for sparking interest in Plymouth Colony and colonial America, but I would not want it to be the only book someone reads about the era!
4.5*
I enjoyed this much more than the My America Series; I thought it was written beautifully for a historical children's book, things were explained in greater detail but still interesting and heartbreaking with all the everyday struggles and deaths.

For some reason, I just love these stories. This one is weirdly slow-moving and includes many entries where very little happens at all. Large swaths of time pass between some entries and very many people die. Because they are written like diaries, many times these books don't have a solid conflict and resolution, and many events seem pointless or random, but something about the strange attempts at authenticity always get to me. I pretty much collect this series now and buy any installment I come across. I have no idea how historically accurate it actually is, but it makes for a fun, quick read and might be enough to spark interest in history for young readers.

a great kids book about the pilgrims. It's even better when you know it's a true account of a 12 year old girl's diary. I can't wait to see what my daughter thinks of it.
