Wow! Some classics are classics for a reason. I was worried it might be a tiresome slog, one only finished out of duty rather than pleasure, but this is quite the swashbuckling, intrigue. Funny, heartfelt, harrowing with a great villain. Most adaptations focus on Richlieu as the villain of the Musketeers, and to an extent, he is, but Milady is a much more formidable foe. There are moments that drag a bit (the six or seven chapters on Milady's imprisonment could have been condensed) but when it soars it really soars. Each character is distinct and I was never lost as to who was who or where their loyalties lay. I especially recommend this Audiobook version read by John Lee. He adds great depth to the characters and humor to the tale.

All for One!

The behavior of the musketeers was dated when Dumas wrote it, and some of Dumas's expressions themselves are also now dated. If you can set aside 21st century ethics, it is an exciting if verbose story of a young man making his way in the male dominated catholic world of 1620s France. While most of the musketeer attitudes and behaviors should no longer be imitated, they continue to set a fine example of friendship: loyalty, sacrifice, all for one and one for all.

This is one of those books that I've heard about all my life but haven't read until now. Thanks to a recommendation from my daughter I've now had the pleasure. What a fun book to read! If you have prior impressions of the musketeers being highly sophisticated and noble you'll be surprised to find out how "normal" they are. It was fun to follow their adventures and amusing to get to know them as people who were out for a good meal, a bottle (or 12) of good wine, and a quick fight now and again. The plot was engaging, the characters great, and this book is truly a good read!

A swashbuckling soap opera! Not as good (or as funny) as Princess Bride, but it reminds me of that style of storytelling. Just misses the mark of being outstanding.

I loved this book. It began my obsession with historical fiction.
