An excellent 17th century adventure. A little wordy at times though.

This is really fast paced and action packed, though it seems a bit over-plotted and under-characterised. The heros can do no wrong, and the villainess is so completely evil that she seems to have no redeeming features.
The voice of the narrator is very distinct, even telling the reader at times that though the characters actions seem despicable to the modern audience (in 1845), the novel is set in the 1630s, and things were done differently there. There is a lightheartedness in this position that showed the author didn’t take the story to seriously.
I did find a lot of the plot, action and coincidences a little to convenient and the characters simplistic, but I shall continue with this series to find out what happens twenty years later.

Another example of a classic that I just don't get. Maybe I should have done more background research/been more familiar with the story...I (stupidly, perhaps) thought this story was about the Three Musketeers...but really it's about d'Artagnan (definitely had to look that spelling up as I listened to it on audiobook and literally had no idea where to start). Some parts of the story were interesting, but some dragged on and on. I didn't really get the beef between the Cardinal and the Musketeers (also they sure put a lot of weight on a gentleman's word). I got lost in parts of the story. I wanted more of the Three Musketeers...and less of her Ladyship. Her whole captivity was painful to listen to...there is no reason it should have been that long. And then the way she came to an end...oof. Rough.
Worth a read if you're really into classics but otherwise you can skip this one
