Have We Met?

I am inclined to agree with the main character that contrary to popular belief, there isn't a match for everyone. But a dating app called Met may prove otherwise. It is an invitation for Corinne to reconnect with four missed men from her past; one of them being her soul mate. It's cute, hopeful and has a cover that screams, "Read Me!" ~LiteraryMarie

A mixed bag of fun things and not as fun things

I’m in the middle on this book because there are things that I liked but also I was kind of underwhelmed. I enjoyed it enough to read to the end. I liked the characters, they were funny and they were dealing with real adult stuff that’s relatable. There were even some parts that even made me chuckle a little. Cori is trying to figure out her next steps in life and trying to find her passion while also processing the loss of her best friend. She’s at a crossroads in her adulthood and I related to that completely. She develops a really solid, supportive friend group and their interactions were fun to read. I liked that this book showed adults still doing fun, whimsical things like karaoke and scavenger hunts. I also liked Cori and her love interest, Cory, together. They were cute.

However, I wish we actually got to see the development of their romance more explicitly. I feel like their relationship in some ways was told to us not shown in they way I would have wanted. Don’t get me wrong, there were parts where they spent time together and I could see their relationship forming but I just wish there was more and that it was described in more detail. I think I would classify this more as women’s fiction than romance. The focus is on Cori’s personal development and the romance is more of a side plot. Also, the sex scenes in this book were fade to black which was kind of disappointing for because I really like Cori and Cory (haha) together. I’d say if you start reading this book adjust your expectations and expect a women’s fiction novel and not a romance. Also, I just kind of didn’t feel the stakes in this novel. Things that caused tension and stress for the MC I didn’t really feel or connect to except for her job searching and need for money. Everything else I was kind of like what are the stakes, why should I care as much as the MC does, why is this so important to her? That was kind of a barrier for me while reading so although I enjoyed aspects of the novel I was kind of bored.

Overall, this is a nice book to fill the time, or something to read in between books. It’s fun light-reading. I loved that we have a protagonist that’s unapologetically Black and that it’s a story that features Black love considering publishing’s obsession with interracial couples at the moment. That made the story enjoyable for me and they have good chemistry together. Oh also, I loved Cori’s relationship with her brother Lito! Lito is deaf and I liked that we got to read about an important character with a disability. Cori and Lito were funny together and I enjoyed reading their scenes a lot! If you read this book don’t expect a full fledged romance. Expect a personal growth story with a romance on the side.

3.5 stars

I was expecting more magic/talking-to-my-bff-from-the-dead trope. I needed more background on the friendship with Joelle so I could sympathize with the character, I wanted more descriptions of the dates she went on, and how DID the app get on her phone? Maybe more background on Joelle’s tech skills?? Just..more.

Delightfully fun

So maybe the drama in this is a little predictable, but I don’t care. The characters are spot on for 21st century, the dialog is real and easy to imagine actually happening, and the app…leads to wondering if it’s fantasy or sci fi or just plain rom com fun. And whichever of those is most applicable is fine by me. Thoroughly enjoyed!

3.8⭐️, I rounded up. This was a really cute book. I absolutely loved how inclusive it was from black men being bisexual and not judged for it to nonbinary people finding love too. I also loved the hair scene. Everyone with natural hair knows how that process goes and to have someone willing to help and even make it intimate was golden. I honestly felt seen in that moment.
The storyline itself was a bit slow and slightly underwhelming, but this may be due to my preference being thrillers. I’m still trying to get into romance novels so not sure how much weight my opinion holds here lol.

Either way, very cute read. Hopefully the second one is even better.

That was a debut? A fun read with an interesting premise.

Amazon first reads

I chose this book as an Amazon first read because the premise was intriguing. I loved reading along as Cori found her way. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Distraught over losing her best friend, and disgruntled with her career choice, Corrine moves back to her hometown in the hopes of putting her life in order. An App is mysteriously downloaded onto her phone which tells her that her soul mate is someone she has already met. Corrine is skeptical, but runs into several former acquaintances, giving her cause to wonder.

I enjoyed this book, but it took some purposeful ignoring of the improbable app situation and the way the characters handled it. Other than that, I liked the characters and the shell of the idea and the way it played out.

Why did I put this story off for as long as I did?! Such a cute story. I enjoyed the banter and the friendship within the story. And I enjoyed seeing the romantic relationship develop from a friendship & how innocent & sweet it was.

Three stars because it was a diverting read as I was traveling, but I never really got into the 'magic' of the app. Like, I love some magical realism, but this was basically 99.9% real life and somehow there's this haunted app that sets you up with your soulmate? Plus, I never really felt satisfied as to the soulmate status of the two protagonists.
