As well as appreciating the usual brilliant savage wit and sarcasm, I felt a lot more sorry for Death on this reread. His conscious effort to be kind to Miss Flitworth in particular was quite touching.

It's not that Reaper Man tries to do too much—it’s that it tries to wrap too much around two already good, thematically aligned stories. The emotional weight of both Death’s and Poons’ arcs risks being undercut by the magical gags and comedic diversions of the faculty.
This feels like one of those cases where Pratchett's tone blender, which usually works so well, is just a touch too noisy. There's genuine pathos, really clever satire, and philosophical reflection, but constantly being interrupted by sentient shopping trolleys and Unseen University slapstick that doesn't hit the mark

4 stars. Fun installment to the series. All of the books have great humor but this one in particular was really funny to me. I laughed out loud quite a bit. A quirky, fun, and entertaining cast of lovable characters and a plot that kept me hooked this is definitely one of my favorites in the series thus far. It was awesome.

Removed points because of the audiobook narrator. Think I would have enjoyed it more by reading it.
Death books seem to be my favorite Discworld books, as they take on an inevitably existential tone -- as you do when Death is your main character. There's a sad sweetness to both this, Mort and Hogfather that I really appreciate.
The B-plot of Reaper Man concerns itself with all the excess life building up from Death's holiday, and the Wizards of Unseen University (truly Pratchett's most personal characters, I feel) dealing with the cancerous growths that start to manifest in Ankh-Morpork, is very funny as well.
