Every complaint I had about the first one fixed itself in this one. A diverse, creative urban fantasy that you should trudge through the first one for.

The only thing about this book that I didn’t really like was the whole love triangle (can it even be called that?) between Sierra, Robbie, and Anthony. It was weird how Robbie seemed like such an important character in the previous book but then all but vanished in this book and then Anthony seemed to come out of nowhere. It was really weird and almost unnecessary.

I understand that romance happens and can be used as an essential plot point but in this series so far, that hasn’t been the case. Writing good romance when it isn’t an essential plot line is hard and I don’t think this book succeeded.

Sierra does it again. This is part 2 of the Shadowshaper Cypher trilogy, and we continue of the journey of our protagonist and her crew. This story felt more mature, and I appreciate seeing the maturation of Sierra from book 1 to book 2 as well as from chapter 1 to the end of the book. She approaches love, conflict, and family dynamics in a way that is a testament to how careful the author was in crafting a girlhood story. This was an enjoyable YA read.  No big complaints, but I must admit, YA is harder for me to get into.

This series is so diverse and fierce and REAL. I'm really loving it, and I still think this is exactly what YA could use more of: black narrators and brutal honesty.

My only complaint is that the first book felt like a prequel to this. Like, [b:Shadowshaper|22295304|Shadowshaper (Shadowshaper, #1)|Daniel José Older|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1416429594s/22295304.jpg|41683308] existed to set this sequel up rather than this being a continuation of the same story. So while I'm intrigued by what will come next, and I love the build of the characters and their powers and their world, it took this long to finally get to the point of the series.

Sierra and her fantastically diverse group of shadowshapers are back in a fast paced, satisfying, sequel to Shadowshaper. Older seamlessly blends fantasy and reality to create a believable world where drawings come to life, spirits move among us, and police arrest and kill innocent black people… Yeah, that last part is reality knocking, and this book opens that door and sheds light on the very real frustration and anger felt by so many. But Older balances this harsh reality with funny, witty dialog, and just enough romance to keep you reading. The diverse cast of characters includes Puerto Rican, Dominican, LGBTQ, African American, and immigrant representations, to name a few, and each is written honestly and believably. The pace is fast and action packed, and like the first book, has a big climactic ending. I can picture this story being made into an awesome movie someday!

A solid sequel. I liked the new worldbuilding aspects brought in and the references to current events. I did not see the twists and turns coming and was in suspense for the entire last third.

This second installment in the series was full of twists and surprises, and I loved it. I especially loved seeing more of Juan and Mami - they're some of my favorite characters from the first book.
