Ah, things are gaining momentum and no one is more unsure of such than Fletcher, resident shape shifter, destined to be the main communicator for all living things in Rowan Harbor. He will quickly realize that there’s no room for hesitation, nor any doubts when it comes to his responsibilities or his burgeoning relationship with former hunter Conner, new to all things magic. There’s definitely an increase in the high stakes evil that is coming to town as the majority of events play out over one day - and what a day it is.

As the big bad advances and shows his cards, there was a good amount of tension and mystery and a sense of foreboding. This nicely expanded more on the various citizens of Rowan Harbor, giving them more depth and complexity. This also didn’t fail on the romance as Fletcher and Conner were sweet and sexy as they face the challenge of Conner’s parents visiting.

Again, the featured guys in this series - Devon, Jesse, Fletcher - continue to battle their issues of insecurity and doubt, continue to come into their own, and step up when needed to embody what they were destined to do. The concept is unique and still enjoyable despite the somewhat anticlimactic ending. There’s 3 more stories to go for these guys to reach their maximal potential, and I hope that Burns delivers on all fronts.

More magic

The town is under siege and Fletcher needs to step up. Fletcher sees a lot of growth in himself over the course of this book. This series definitely needs to be read in order but I’m really enjoying getting g to know these characters.

First off, I would like to say that all the Fletcher-Oak interactions are absolute gold (I love Oak, I love Fletcher, really this should be obvious). Fletcher has grown since the last time we visited him. Now he's anticipating a visit from Cameron's parents when the town wards start acting up.

Cameron and Fletcher are adorably domestic and (still) very cute together. Cam has found his own niche in Rowan Harbor, and the two are settled in a steady relationship. As with Jesse and Sean's pairing, I felt like a skipped a couple of chapters, but I'm starting to think that the I-love-you developments for the couples (except Wade and Devon) happen off-screen. Given that there are gaps of months (in the storyline) between installments, this makes sense. (I still don't like it, but fair enough.)

The plot was well-balanced in this one too. Character development, romance, suspense - all of it came together cohesively. I can't wait to read more of Fletcher's story.

Attack

The attack they have all been waiting for in Rowan Harbor is here. It takes a terrible toll on some when the truth is discovered. Great reading!

This is up till now my favorite in the series mostly because there was a hell of lot happening.

Fletcher's development in his tutoring with Oak, Conner's development in his magic, his and Conner's relationship, the action at the end. Really this was the book that had me saying FINALLY!!!

Can't wait to start the last 3!!!

If I had to put in words exactly why I love this series so much, I think I would have to say because - for all the paranormal and urban fantasy aspects of it - at its heart, this is a series about finding yourself.

For Fletcher, it's realising that he can be worried about his life without it becoming an overwhelming fear. It's also about acceptance, acceptance that when Conner says he loves him, he truly does mean it forever.

The supernatural suspense elements are always intricately woven into the rest of the narrative too. Here it feels, possibly rightly so as we hit the final run of the nine book series, that all the pieces are being put into place for the grand finale.

I love every thing about this series, it's quirky, it plays with the tradition paranormal tropes and subverts them and, while there are powerful magical people and creatures, none are used as a Deus Ex Machina.
