Marla, wife, and mother have disappeared. Marla’s sister Shelly doesn’t believe Marla would just up and disappear, so she reaches out to TV Journalist Jordan Manning for help.

Jordan feels the pressure to prove herself after solving some murders and gaining a reputation. So when Shelly reaches out, she understands her concerns and feels compelled to do all she can to find Marla.

After being approved for this one on netgalley I learned it was part of a series. I had no idea going in. I enjoyed Jordans character as a investigative journalist. She really does a good job getting down into the weeds and putting the pieces together to come up with leads and then tracks them down. In this book, she was looking for a missing wife and mother. I don’t think that it was necessarily the most interesting of cases to go looking for honestly. Yes, if I went missing, I’d want someone with Jordans skills looking for me, but the chances are low. So, the book wasn’t realistic. Okay, now all fiction is, and I get that, but it just seemed that this one was going for believability. This one did seem to come together a bit too nicely for me, I prefer a little roughness or something to be desired, and I didn’t get any of that here. The ending, like the rest of the book, was picture perfect with no guessing and it was exactly what you thought it would be. There’s just something to be said for serving everything up so nicely on a silver platter.

Thank you so much to William Morrow and Netgalley for this e-arc in exchange for an honest review.

Super SLOW start but what an unraveling twist.

I loved the first book in this series SO much. This one was a let down. The story wasn’t intriguing. There was no surprise ending. And Jordan felt like a different character.

I was provided an advanced copy of this book which has not affected my review.

After Marla drops her child off at preschool, she disappears.
Marla Hancock recently left her verbally abusive Husband and is now staying with her sister Shelly until she can get back on her feet.

When Shelly calls the local police to report Marla is missing, Shelly feels that Marla’s missing person case is not getting the attention it deserves.  After several weeks of Marla missing, Shelly can’t just sit by and let this case go cold. That is when Shelly calls on investigative reporter Jordan Manning.

Jordan Manning is a well-developed main character and I love how the author makes you feel that you are side by side with Jordan during the investigation. There are some interesting issues including race, wealth and politics of being an investigative reporter.

This is the second book in the Jordan Manning series.  I did read As the Wicked Watch and loved them both. You can read either book as a stand-alone.

Thank you to NetGalley, the author, Tamron Hall and the publisher, William Morrow, for the opportunity to read and review an advanced reader's copy of this book.
