I started this read because the book is supposed to be a seminal sci-fi classic. It won awards, so it's supposed to be excellent.
I have learned that awards don't point to good books. They point to books that win awards. Moving forward I will likely be relying on popular opinion from my book-loving partner and here on Goodreads.
Blah. At least it's over.

I'm glad I read Rngworld because it is a "classic" of science fiction, but it is dated. Very very dated. I was intrigued by Nessus and the Puppeteers, but the relationship between Louis and Teela (he's 200, she's 20 and a descendant of an old girlfriend of his) is creepy, cringe worthy, and sexist. The character development isn't great to begin with, but it is especially lacking with the female characters. The plot got dull and too science-y toward the end, and there was too much gratuitous sex.
I'm interested to see how the discussion with my book club goes.

lulled me into a false sense of security regarding sexism
Larry Niven takes readers on an epic other-world journey, finding engineering marvels and evolutionary perils along the way. The characters, however, suffer from exhibiting boring arcs and there are several points where I felt dramatic irony was not well executed. The book mainly relies on the fantastic ideas of an engineered world shaped as a nearly indestructible ring around a sun, but falls short on developing a compelling character story. At no point did I feel like I was rooting for any of the characters, and I felt much of their personalities fell into uninteresting stereotypes.
Honestly, I still don't get it. Maybe I'm too simple for this award winning book or I don't know. It was plain boring and not very engaging. I liked the characters well enough and the setup was interesting but the writing just didn't get me to care much. I didn't even care for the apparent cliffhangers at the end.
So yeah, only 2 stars even if it maybe deserves more.

There’s an interesting story hidden somewhere below the awful prose here. A story that drags with no real pay off and I still had trouble trying to figure why something was important or what the hell was happening, Dune was easier to read and follow compared to this.
I can see the appeal and the influence that Ringworld had in Sci-Fi as a whole, but honestly, this book was not terrible but it wasn’t any good either.
