Really got lost in this one. Beautifully written, well-crafted story that won my heart with the humanity of its characters and the magical realism woven throughout. Authenticity drives almost every part of this book, from the story itself to the threads of magic and character dynamics. I just feel...uncertain about the ending, and not in the way I normally love. I feel like the end was overall a bit rushed, and even just having a little bit more of the conclusion to let us process everything would've helped it feel more "tied up," even with an open-ended finale. Regardless, this is a beautiful book and a wonderful read.
There are far, far worse worlds to get lost in. That isn't to say that this story is without its heartache (far, far from it.) But I think there's something to be said for a story that can capture so much of reality of our world--both what's ugly and what's beautiful--and still allow us to get lost in its pages.

Beautiful, and heartbreaking. A young Haitian immigrant, who is a US citizen by birth but has lived in Haiti most of her life, immigrates to Detroit to live with her aunt and cousins. Her mother is detained by immigration. Cultures clash as she tries to learn how to navigate a world that is completely foreign to her.
I listened to the audiobook performed by Robin Miles and highly recommend it. Miles did a flawless job of reading this wonderful, but emotionally difficult novel about a Haitian teen who moves to Detroit to live with family.
This book was beautiful specially towards the end. The climax was real intense and had me on the edge of my seat. I could feel Fabiola's pain when she missed her Manman and her sense of otherness in this whole new place. I hated Dray and think he got what he deserved, but oh poor Kasim! Really hard hitting and quite beautiful.
