If you don't read any other animorphs books in your life you should read this. My brain feels like it got zapped by lightning

The Animorphs reread continues! I hadn't read this one before either. It's the backstory of Visser One, largely before she infested Eva, Marco's mother. I didn't like it as much as the other auxiliary works, but the backstory was pretty interesting.

Probably the best of all the Animorphs books. I didn't read it when I was initially following the series, which I think caused it to pack even more of a punch. With some life experience to go along with it, the issues the book rises are mind-blowing.

Devastating stuff! Really helps you understand that the thing that’s so gross about the yeerks isn’t that they’re parasites, it’s that they’re fascists. Love the Marco stuff in here too, and generally the celebration of humanity.

It's always cool to figure out where things begin, and see how events in the past have affected events in the standard 54 books of the Animorphs series. It's also really important to see how events of the past correspond to the present.

Here's a lesser known fact about me: I love origin stories.

My favorite characters, I love reading about how they came to be what they were. I love reading prequels that tell the story of what was before the original, how the Earth became the way it was (because everyone loves fucking with the Earth). I love the why.

It was probably mainly due to this book that I love origin stories so much.

Super annoyed at this cover. They go and put on an intimidating as hell Visser Three on the front and back of this book, and its not even a book about him!! Its more about Visser One!!! Like, this book has Visser Three, but it is told in the perspective of Visser One. Can't she get any cover love???

So, basically Visser One is on trial for her past actions of appearing to help the Andalite Bandits, and whether her actions were in the interest of the Yeerk Empire. Visser Three is present at her trial, and does his best to make sure she is shown in the worst possible light, and as a result ends up placing himself under suspicion as well.

On the one hand it was pretty entertaining to watch these two nemesis go at it, trying to one up each other, but on the other hand, some of the tactics, particularly when V.3 orchestrates a fake Andalite Bandit take down, it ends up kind of making this aspect of the Yeerk universe more dumb and less intimidating and dark. Its hard to have a fear for these aliens taking over the world, when they were so easily deceived by fake Andalite warriors. The Animorphs have nothing to worry about.

It was interesting to learn Visser One's origin story on how she became the leader of the Earth take over. However, none of her actions really made me think, "Oh that's how she became Visser One!" It was more like "She became Visser One why???"

The best part of the story was less than 6 whole pages when Marco comes face to face with Visser One. Kind of worth it though. He has really grown into a great character in this series.
