Listened to on audiobook. I am fascinated by stories of Occupied France during WWII. This book was no exception. I was engrossed right away with the relationship between the 2 sisters and how they dealt with the things happening as the Nazis took over France. You really got a sense of how horrible and terrifying those times were.
The reader was fantastic and really made the world come alive, but I think I would have loved it if I had read it in print also, since the world was in the writing. I really hope they make this into a movie.
As much as I liked All The Light We Cannot See, I feel that this book is more "real", and if I had to choose which one of the two to read, I'd pick this one. Highly recommend.

This book was absolutely heartbreaking. Love how Kristin Hannah makes her books so good but also educational! Also loved the sister element! 4.5 stars ⭐️

This book is my "did I finish it or did it finish me?" I'm deeply captured. Saying that it was beautifully-written is an understatement. It made me feel emotions I haven't felt, it broke me, it tore me in countless pieces, and it made my heart melt, I can't imagine how it was able to do so many things to my heart. New favorite now.

The Nightingale was a great work of historical fiction that tells the story of two sisters during the German occupation of France during WWII. The younger sister, who is often called "impetuous", actively fights back against the Nazis, putting herself in harms way time and time again. The older sister remains at home with her child, but must overcome the struggles that come with needing to house German soldiers and live day-to-day in a place where food and resources are incredibly scarce.
This was a TOUGH one! Each I listened, I got more depressed and stressed - which is the right reaction to the reality of the war and what people went through. Every situation just became more dire, and the story just did not let up. It was long and a bit slow at times, but it was needed to set the stage and appropriately tell this epic story. I highly recommend it on Audible - the reader did a phenomenal job with voices for each person, as well as nailing French, German, and English accents beautifully.
I'd say it's a must read for those into historical fiction or who are big hearted and ready to be taken on an emotional ride.
