home girl couldn’t stop marrying men and being problematic. will salut
Idk why I wanted to read this book but interesting! Such levels of wealth and philanthropy are just so incredibly out of touch now.

The writing is simplistic and repetitive. There is little character development to explain sudden, massive changes. There is some information that is interesting but I felt like I could have gotten the same info from a Wikipedia page in much less the time. Lots of descriptions of luxury if that’s your thing- a bit of a nice fantasy to imagine living as a millionaire.
Possibly 3.5 stars. October's book club pick.
I enjoyed The Magnificent Lives of Marjorie Post. I found it interesting and engaging, however, for me, it was not a great book.
Marjorie Merriweather Post was born to somewhat humble beginnings. The book, told in first person, form Marjorie's point of view, begins in 1891 with the Post family's arrival in Battle Creek, Michigan, to seek medical treatment for Marjorie's father from Dr. Kellogg. The family stays in a boarding house run by a Christian Scientist landlady who ends up helping C.W. Post more than Dr. Kellogg. This inspires C.W. Post to invent Grape Nuts and Postum, the business which eventually becomes General Foods.
The story follows Marjorie through her parent's divorce, her own four marriages, her reputation as a hostess, and her charitable work. Throughout, there are glimpses of world events and famous people.
Perhaps the author correctly captured Marjorie's voice, however, I found some parts predictable (and though I vaguely knew the name, I did not know anything about MMP prior to reading the book) and Marjorie's behavior, and that of the rich people surrounding her, exasperating.
All in all, the book was enjoyable and should lead to some interesting discussion.
I found, what may be an error in the book. On page 313, in 1940, MMP, addresses a reporter as Ms. Beale. I do not think that the Ms. honorific came into use that early. However, Google tells me that Ms. was proposed as early as 1901 and came into limited business use in the 1950's.

I liked the name dropping and the historical elements of this novel, but I didn't really like the protagonist. There were parts of the novel that I felt were far too detailed, and other parts where I wished that the author had spent more time. Historically speaking, I think she led a remarkable life; however, if I hadn't done some additional research on her and only had the novel as a source of information, I would not have been impressed at all.
I usually don’t like life stories, but pretty good. A lot of name dropping and facts !
