I’m a total masochist for reading this for a third time, but this time I shared it with my 11yo. We laughed and cried and hugged our dog a little harder. All the good things during our quarantine.

More like a 4.5 star book
About a 10 year old boy who wants two hunting dogs and figures out a way to get it. And his life with the dog in the secluded areas of ozarks Missouri.
I was going to let my 10 yr old read it if it was good. But there’s a part there where a child dies in an accident. And it was kind of dark. Even thought it did have a lot of positive messages. So… not sure.

I have read this classic masterpiece numerous times in my life. First as a teen, then as a young adult and even later as an adult with grown children. This time, I listened to the audiobook version. As I listened, I anticipated what was next, listened and cried as a boy worked hard for what he wanted (his dogs), faithfully trained and cared for them. I cried as they repaid his love and kindness with love of their own as Old Dan and Little Ann fought against the mountain lion that would have taken Billy's life had they not worked to defeat him. They did this out of love and loyalty. They also both died--Old Dan of his injuries while trying to save his master and Little Ann of a broken heart. Where they are buried, a red fern grows up between them. It is said that the red fern grows where true love was.

I haven’t cried reading a book in a long time. That streak is over. What a wonderful tale.
I've only cried twice in my life. Once was when I read this book.
