Dr Tony Hill is confined to bed in hospital, recovering from being attacked by a patient attempting to escape at the institution where he works - poor in body, but his mind is fast recovering and itching to work.

DCI Carol Jordan, meanwhile, is dealing with a dead football hero murdered with deadly ricin poison, when an explosion rocks the stadium during a match dedicated to his memory. And just as her team gets to work, the Counter Terrorism Command from Manchester take over the investigation, convinced the blast is their area of expertise. They're secretive and bullies, but Carol and her team still have a job to do despite their presence.

One day I must go and start this series from the beginning, but I like what I've read so far ("The Torment of Others" #4 three years ago and this one, #5) and I'm keen for more.

I enjoyed the plot but found parts of the book too detailed for me/hard going. I also struggle a bit with lots of characters but that's just me. It kept me reading but I was a bit relieved when I finished it.

More of a 3.5 for me. Well written as always, I just don’t tend to find bombing or potential terror plots quite as interesting - that’s just my preference, no qualms on Val’s writing. Always enjoy her books though!

Enjoyed this installment in McDermid's Tony Hill/Carol Jordan series. The two mysteries are quite interesting, and the complicated nature of Tony and Carol's relationship is always compelling.
