Absolutely fantastic read! I've never read Dave Wolverton before this book, but he is a true master with visual imagery and has a talent for bringing a fantastical, foreign world alive to the reader. I will look for other books by him.
I was intrigued by all the action that kept me reading at a clipped pace, and the casual introduction of never before seen "Star Wars" characters like Prince Isolder and the evil Sith Gethzerion. Luke grew leaps and bounds in his knowledge of the Force, and the battle with Warlord Zsinj brought a close to some of us who have been reading about the New Republic's struggle against Zsinj through the "X-Wing" series. I enjoyed this read.

I need ten minutes to discuss Han Solo on a mic. I need to. I have this deep anger in me. This book should be called "Han Solo fucks up everyone's day and takes no accountability for his actions." He literally kidnaps Leia and she's supposed to marry this man? What the hell.
Pretty sure Dave Wolverton went through a break up in the middle of this book. There are about 3-4 chapters in the middle where he's constantly talking about breasts. Women undressing. Women showing off their boobs. Teneniel gets a Force lightning bolt to the boob, and Luke has to touch her boob to heal her. Did your girlfriend leave you, Dave? Do you miss her boobies?
When Luke is being his dumb Ace Himbo self, he's wonderful. The moment he becomes Mr. 'Omniscient I have every power because I'm a God now self and I will talk down to everyone about the Force because only my way mattered with my whole 3 days of training with Yoda,' I want to throw him into the garbage.
Teneniel is both my favorite character and the biggest issue with the book. I adore her as she is and her romance with Isolder and crush on Luke are super cute. I hate how she is used as a narrative function as the reason why Han does not have to ever take accountability for his actions and that's gross. Her role in the plot is the break up Leia and Isolder. Han just bides his time until Leia is free again. Only apologizes when innocent people are dying not the *check notes* kidnapping Leia against her will, shoving her into the floor of the Falcon, and putting millions of lives at risk because he got butt hurt at the pretty man.
Also, Leia cries a lot and gets sidelines constantly on grounds that she's a lady. Carrie Fisher would decimate you, Dave.
Love the Nightsisters and Singing Mountain Clan stuff minus the gross colonizing language used towards them. Blow that colonizing dogwhistle louder, Dave.
The last quarter of the book is awesome. The multisided final battle with all the characters is really great. This book has several strong points. But boy the warts are big and gross when this book struggles. I wasn't a big Han Solo fan coming into the book. This made me officially hate the man. If that's what you were going for, good job, Dave.

Not the greatest Star Wars book, but it's sure a lot of fun.
Have you ever wondered what would happen if you crossed Star Wars with straight fantasy? And then wrote it like it was a trashy airport romance novel? Well if you have (and even if you haven't) this is the book for you!
Princess Leia has been proposed to by space Fabio who has arrived at Coruscant with as much grandeur as Prince Ali in Aladdin. Now Leia must decide, does she want his royal bod? Or Harrison Ford's swagger? Oh, and Luke fights some witches, that part was fun too.
Seriously, all this happens and more, it is over the top, kinda trashy, but also kind of brilliant. This is definitely no Heir to the Empire, but if you don't take it too seriously it's much fun you're unlikely to care.
I give this 3 stars for story and a whole extra star for pure enjoyment.

I'll get this out of the way first by saying that there were things I loved about this novel.
- The Nightsisters
- Rancor riding and the rancors being portrayed as more than just mindless beasts.
But the one thing that puts all of this novel's potential aside is the terrible portrayal of Han and Leia.
Both these characters do things that completely betray their movie characterisation as well as characterisation in other EU novels.
- Leia would never just leave Han for some hot prince the minute she saw him. She turned Lando down in Empire... She'd turn Isolder down too. This book turns her into a shallow person. I've found some EU authors just don't know what to do with Leia and devolve to sexist tropes in their portrayal of her. It happened in Splinter of the Mind's Eye and it happens here too.
- Han would accept Leia's choice and not KIDNAP her against her will to win her back. When Han asks Leia if she loves Luke in RotJ he says that he won't get in the way. Of course he had nothing to worry about in the end there as Leia only meant love in a sibling way.
This could have been a romance book showing Han and Leia's marriage instead of making it a love triangle for cheap drama. It is a shame because this book has so much going for it lore and story wise. It just makes me sad.

Read in high school, so it wasn't this publication, but had this cover. Remember really liking the Dathomir "witches" and wanting to ride a rancor.

Some might say that Han Solo is out of character, I beg to differ. Han Solo has always been a simp and a secret softy. His friendship with C-3PO as a way to win over Leia is extremely cute. Luke’s discourse regarding the force stuck out to me.
There was a weird relationship between Prince Isoloder & Teneniel & Luke. Which at the end felt rushed as a way to eliminate Isolder as a potential suitor for Leia. The wedding was also rushed, but Luke showing up fifteen minutes late felt very on par for him.
