I somehow expected much more of this book. The style is good, with a more adult telling of the stories. I loved the circular structure. But the stories themselves got quite repetitive and boring, focusing mainly on male-female relationships. There's more to 1001 nights than this. The book is OK, but just OK.

I'm not sure why, but I expected the writing to be more vibrant. The locations, the stories, and the characters were full of life, but the writing was lacking. I think this would have been a four star review if that had been different because I really did enjoy the stories chosen. Especially those near the middle where the events are connected. I would happily read those again.

I liked it. It was a fun read. But I wanted to like it more. But perhaps the whole idea is just NFD(Not For Dawn)and that's why I've never gotten through any version in the past. Too much head-chopping and baseless intrigue. I think I got a little annoyed after awhile.

Eh. Too modern. And i'm pretty sure she made up some of the stories. 2.5/5

this was my first time actually reading a translation of the thousand and one nights. I’ve wanted to ever since I heard the scheherazade piece from rimsky korsakov. however I have to say I was disappointed and in hindsight I shouldn’t have read this version first (or at all??)… I’ll have to try a more faithful version one day, hopefully with a writing style more akin to oral storytelling

It was great to finally have read it even if there is no actual ending.

If you've ever read an abridged version of The Arabian Nights for kids and are now an adult, you owe it to yourself and to Shaherazad to read this translation/retelling - poetic, exciting, surprisingly raunchy and altogether magical. It's not all the tales, but that doesn't matter when they're so sublimely written.

It's a really interesting, casual book, very easy to get into it, and the stories and characters are funny. The stories can be compared to some of the more original, more 'vulgar', fairytales of for instance the Grimm Brothers. The only bad thing was that the ending, though contentwise very good, was rather abrupt. There is some explicit language so reader discretion is advised.
