Beautifully written, bridge of Clay allows us to experience and understand the life of the fourth son of two spectacular parents. It is so full of life, regrets, love and loss and just encompasses so much raw humanity. Clay will stay with me for a while, and everyone should read this book at least once
A scattered, shattered book about a handful of brothers. As with The Book Thief, tangled threads of foreshadowing weave their way throughout and somehow neatly tie together at the very end. An epic maze that was hard to follow at times, but full of heart.
Reminded me a bit of We the Animals.
(Small quibble: I kept getting caught in the weeds trying to figure out who "he" was. There were 6 "he's" in this family and it would have helped to print a few more proper nouns for clarification's sake.)

It took a long time to read and at times I felt the author was just padding out the story. Dragged on in many places and although I loved The Book Thief I can’t say the same about this book. Having said that, I didn’t dislike it either. There were many insightful and interesting aspects - dealing with a mother who is dying and a bereft father; life of five boys having to parent themselves; one boy keeping a terrible secret; the angst of young love.

I'm not sure what to even say about this. I have a feeling if I had read it instead of listening to it, I would have liked it better. As it was, I had to listen to the first 40 or so minutes twice because I had no idea what was going on. When I could make myself pat attention I could tell that there was some beautiful writing going on. I had a hard time relating to and liking the characters sometimes. I always felt like I was missing something though. I kind of wish I had stopped and just read the book, but I also knew I would never be able to make myself start it if I stopped the audiobook. Anyway, this may be an amazing book. But you definitely have to pay more attention than I was able to.
Mooi en ontroerend, maar Zusaks vormexperiment doet het verhaal af en toe sputteren. Toch zullen de Dunbar-broers (en hun ouders) (en hun huisdieren) me nog lang bijblijven.
probably the most brilliantly written book I've read this year. Takes some work at first, yet it is (in my opinion) so worth it. Explores relationships, human connections, blame/forgiveness and love in a tapestry of interwoven stories. Tugged at my heart in a non-manipulative way. Highly recommended.

Beautiful and heartbreaking. This is a story about family, love, and complicated relationships. It’s so sad and the writing is poetry.
Such beautiful prose and storytelling . For a while I was confused as to who was the narrator as I expected it to be Clay. A powerful story of love and grief, and how each may manifest across generations. Poignant and evocative language so well describes people and places. I didn't want it to end
