2014 Review:
I had been waiting for this book for a year, ever since I read the Dark Heroine: Dinner for a vampire. I was anticipating reading about Violet Lee and Kaspar Varn again. I just needed to know more about them. How she experienced turning into a vampire and how they handled her dad.

So about this book:
This book starts a few months before Violet gets taken by Kaspar. You see how Autumn sees the story and lives it. Its funny how everything I thought I knew is different now. The Sagean leaders knew who the First Dark Heroine was long before Autumn knew. I thought Autumn knew already but she didn't. Things are so different than I though them to be. In my head she's older and stronger than Vi. But she isn't. A sad little girl, just as scared of what's next as Vi is.

I was annoyed by how Fallon stalks about the vampires. How they think about them. It goes both ways, but still. My judgement was clouded by Kaspar while reading this book. That made it hard for me to get into the different perspective. Never the less. I loved it.

I can't wait for the next book. To read more about Vi & Rose and the third girl.

I was so excited to start this book - I absolutely loved Dinner with a Vampire so was really looking forward to seeing how this story would develop. What I didn't expect was for the book to showcase the same events of book one but from Autumn Rose's point of view. I was a little hesitant at first but there is no repetition in the book; it's all new and fresh and I loved this book even more than the first one! Autumn is a much more likeable character and I truly cared about what happened to her and and the royal family. Even though this book doesn't lead to much progression with regards to the story, it is definitely a great read - truly captivating.

I loved learning about the Sagean community in this book. It was even more fascinating than the world of vampires in the last. I got so immersed in this community and was eager to learn how the events developed from Autumn's point of view. It was a very emotional read and filled with so many *feels* moments. It was difficult to see Autumn attempting to recover from her Grandmother's death and coming to terms with her role as Guardian at her school. She is responsible for ensuring that the students are safe from the Extermino. Autumn harbours a few secrets which are slowly revealed as the novel progresses. I really loved reading from her point of view; everything seemed so much fresher and made for a much nicer read compared to that of Violet's. It was definitely interesting to see the events unfolding which led to the revelation of Violet Lee in Dinner with a Vampire. I love that it has been written like this, but I hope that next bit progresses the story a little more.

Gibbs' writing has developed immensely in this book with the world building being much cleaner and the language is more mature. The world that she creates is so captivating, I really couldn't put this book down. One of my most anticipated reads of 2014 and it definitely didn't disappoint. Abigail Gibbs is definitely a very talented lady and I'm looking forward to reading more from her - bring on book three!

The story is rather slow for the first part. But after that I was hardly able to stop until I finished. The storyline really comes together with the storyline of the first book and it’s slowly building up to something much bigger. I really hope there will be a 3rd book at some point.

First of all, I made a woopsy and bought this book instead of the first book in the Dark Heroines series, but it doesn’t matter!!! This book is kind of tied in with the first novel, The Dark Heroine: Dinner with a Vampire, but not so much that you actually need to read the first book. I was a bit confused near the end where some parts are skimmed over because they were described in detail from a different perspective in the first novel, but it wasn’t too crazy and I pretty much knew what was going on. I will most certainly go back and read the first novel because it’s got legitimately blood thirsty vampires and a kidnapped girl that I’m sure will play HUGE roles in the forthcoming novels.

I haven’t actually expressed how much I enjoyed Autumn Rose. Plainly put, it was phenomenal and one of the best paranormal fantasy type novels I’ve read in so long! Probably the best since I picked up the Dresden Files and fell in love. The cast of characters was varied and awesome and if I’m totally honest with myself, I thought Fallon was a hottie. Autumn Rose Al-Summers and many of the other characters are not quite human; they are Sage, which means they are dimension-crossing magic users. From what I understand, the Sage are kind of like peace keepers or moderators for the dark beings that reside in other dimensions. Though this sounds uneventful, it is anything but that. Sage are guardians in human schools around the world and fight the Extermino, which are like a rogue branch of the Sagean tree.

Initially the book seemed straightforward, but the longer I read the more intricate details appeared. There is a complex socio-political element involving the various Sage houses, the humans, the other dimensions and even the media. I was surprised and I loved every single moment of it! I so wish that I could learn more about Autumn Rose’s upbringing at the St. Sapphire’s school and her early life in the Athenean court because it sounds superb, and I desperately want descriptions of ball gowns and magic classes. Did I mention that there’s even a treaty that has to be upheld to prevent war between the different peoples?

There was so much depth packed into a pretty average sized book. I am hungrily waiting for the third novel in the series to be released so I can hopefully read about the discovery of the third Heroine and maybe see even more of Autumn Rose and her fabulous temper. I highly recommend this book to readers of YA, paranormal fantasy, or just fantasy in general. The only aspect I have a qualm with is that Autumn Rose was just so young! I wish she had of been around 18(+) just because she acted older than 15-16 and she had such responsibility placed upon her. Despite this, I adore the book and think Abigail Gibbs will be on my auto-buy list from now on.

It’s a damned sight better than the first book - I mentioned in my review of Dinner with a Vampire that I would be interested to see how Abigail would re-write it now, and I feel like the writing style of “Autumn Rose” would be what that would look like to a massive degree.

I think that there are still slight bits that I cringe at, but that’s just showing the age of the book more than anything.

Altogether, the plot is phenomenal, I think Abigail has tackled Autumn’s depression in a really interesting way along with the later bits about Violet’s trauma following the events of book 1, and I’m really disappointed that I don’t have a third book to read in this series, because it really has a lot of potential.

Ach well, I’ll continue to keep my eye out for anything Abigail does publish going forward.

I was looking forward to this book after reading the first book. Unfortunately I found it disappointing as it was extremely slow to start. I found that I had to force myself to read it as I kept losing interest.

I also struggled to connect with Autumn at all and found that she was very difficult to like. I also found her relationship with Fallon annoying and unbelievable at times. When Violet and Kasper from the first book turned up in this book it got worse as Autumn was extremely judgemental. Making it difficult to like Violet and Kasper, annoying as I had connected with those characters more than Autumn.

I found that how the characters were being portrayed in this book was completely different from the second book, a real shame as the heroine prophecy got me hooked. I do not think I will continue in the series. I loved the first book in the series but think I may read that as a standalone and just forget this book. I would not recommend this book.

Recensie: http://thebookreview.nl/recensies/young-adult/herfstroos-abigail-gibbs-2/

It took me a while to see the connection to the first book but the story is wide and interesting and I want to follow it to the next book in the series.

So this booked popped up as a recommendation on Hoopla. I was over halfway through it before I realized it's the second book in a series. Now I'm disappointed to see it appears no 3rd book was made? The story line is really good. I got through it in a couple days. I really want to recommend others read it, however, it ends on a cliffhanger. Like a show that was really good and didn't get renewed for another reason and now I'm left wonder what the heck happens..
