emotional funny hopeful informative inspiring lighthearted fast-paced

First time reading this, though I watched a movie adaptation ages ago. At the core, this is a cute cozy read. While I didn't expect such casual racism to be present, it didn't exactly come as a surprise, given the time period this was written. Not to mention the ableism.

Read this for our in person bookclub’s “Classic” pick. I don’t think I read this book as a child so it doesn’t hold the nostalgia for me it might for others.

It was a nice pallete cleanser pick with a good story of friendship and love, but it also had problematic parts as it was written in 1911.

I gave it 3.5 stars. I can say I read it, but don’t have any feelings negative or positive about it,

Might be a precursor to the cozy fantasy genre. We get to see through a garden and the different children we meet how the most important thing is the love of a mother or lack there of, and how the children fair in each situation. I only wish we spent more time just looking at the flowers.
