Anne Rice has said that this is her favourite of the Vampire Chronicles and it has sometimes been mine as well. I enjoy Memnoch's explanation of cosmology and this is the first telling of the Christian mythology that has seemed in any way logical to me. The way Rice describes the father/son/holy ghost finally made some sense. It's a compelling read even to someone like myself who's an atheist.
This business of capitalizing pronouns when referring to "God" is distracting to me. I frequently stumble over it thinking a new sentence is beginning. It happens so frequently in this book that it became somewhat frustrating.
After the despicable acts Lestat commits in The Tale of the Body Thief I like that Rice puts him through his paces in this volume. He is humbled and one really feels a difference in his character.

Not my favorite of the Vampire Chronicles. It wasn't completely horrible, I just grew weary of the endless conversations between Lestat and Memnoch that never seemed to settle anything or go anywhere. I enjoyed it the first time I read it years ago, but with this rereading, I skimmed through a few chapters when I couldn't take anymore of the long, boring descriptions. The beginning and end were really great, the middle- not so much.
The first half has too much Lestat, but the second half is purely amazing from a theological point of view, including the Thirteen Revelations of Evolution; Memnoch being cast from Heaven for questioning God (I have trouble accepting blanket statements from authority figures too!); Memnoch's appeal for souls to be allowed entrance to Heaven; God's invention of Hell; and "sanctified suffering."
THIS IS NOT THE LESTAT YOU'RE LOOKING FOR.
This is not a novel it's a sermon, a rant even. Its all here God, The Devil, Creation, Angels, Heaven & Hell. You could call it The Gospel according to Rice. If you get to the bit where Lestat drinks the blood of Christ then you've done really really really well. You might think that is a really exciting part of the book but it really isn't. Nothing really happens apart from a tiny bit at the end.
first 180 pages ok
last 40 pages ok
The rest is preachy, bonkers and pointless.

"the adhd is strong in this one" i quote myself about lestat in this book.
this book is just anne rice writing bible fanfiction inserting her character lestat... this is about the devil memnoch who infactuates himself with lestat and with wanting to add him to his deeds. he shows lestat his story, heaven and hell and why he was vanished to try to convince him to join him.
by the end it gets so silly and confusing, definitely some drug trip because what was that. at least the action by the end is very good and it ends with a HUGE cliffhanger that will be talked about in the next book 'the vampire armand'.
the weakest book so far and i like to read weird catholic shit, as an ex-catholic now agnostic guy. it was too weird and also dora is SO boring omg.
bosch’s garden of earthly delights is mentioned a lot and yeah, if you looked up the painting, that's exactly how it felt reading some parts of this book.

While I found this book to be interesting with the thoughts posed on religion and the afterlife... most of the book is a monologue of Memnoch speaking with Lestat. I was waiting for something to happen, but nothing ever really did. Like I said before, I thought it was interesting, which is why it gets a 3, but overall, I wouldn't find it to be a very important book in the series.

Book review of Memnoch the Devil by Anne Rice. 3 out of 5 stars ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️.
For readers who are drawn to captivating explorations of the human condition, the nature of good and evil, and the complexities of faith, Memnoch the Devil by Anne Rice is a rich and immersive journey that penetrates the realms of the supernatural, inviting readers to ponder the mysteries of the divine and the darkness that lies within.
Lestat doesn’t have any of my pity any longer. He had a chance to remain human. In fact all of his friends wanted him to. But lord! 😂 This Lestat just brought out a whole new level of brat.
“I was worn and miserable and I loved crying.”
Yes. Yes you do. Anne’s writing is still phenomenal. But I’m getting tired of getting into the story more than halfway through the book. It’s exhausting to read something you know you won’t get into until the last 150 pages. I’m curious to how else Anne writes outside of her vampire chronicles.
To say that the novels have captured me would be a lie. I’m only finishing them because it’s one of my honeys favorite series and I’ve already gone so far. 🤷🏻♀️ hoping it gets better.
