The Smiley retrospective continued with ‘The Looking Glass War’, which apparently got poor reviews initially . It was probably much to do with our perception of spies as being on top of their game while the spies here are bumbling amateurs. I actually liked it a lot. Just a simple story seeped in meaning. I am so enjoying this journey through Le Carré’s work.

The Sarcastic and cynical tone kept me reading but I couldn't have cared less about the story and I was annoyed about how the book ended.

Old men living out their war time memories & dreams go on an ultimately pointless mission, to sustain their own importance, and are then saved by a rival organisation while sacrificing one who is clearly not one of them. Full of class comment and searing judgement on the futility of their craft. A great read.
Le Carré’s disdain and ethical qualms with the British intelligence service is on full display in this novel. While it was a bit slow and often felt bogged down by descriptors, Le Carre’s ability to make me angry sad and confused makes the story worth it. An amazing author and this book did not disappoint, although it’s characters surely did (which was of course the point)
Truly the bleak wastefulness of Cold War spyfare

Most of this book was tedious, but once again the ending was the best part.
