Frustratingly aimless. I regret spending time on this one. Breakfast of Champions felt like a disjointed, rambling stream of consciousness with little structure or payoff. While there were a few clever lines, the overall experience was confusing and unsatisfying. I’m genuinely baffled by its reputation.

I have to admit that this read was a hard slap in the face, a reality check on the history of the United States and how we fit into the grand scheme of things. I can't say I don't agree with him, that would be most hypocritical. Vonnegut pretty much opens and unleashes his thoughts in a most brilliant way. From the start we know that he, the author is in control of the work, the creator and the narrator, the characters go where he leads them and he can be brutal at times. Adult content and explicit language throughout and might I say must be read with an open mind at all times. Exceptional and thought provoking.

For some reason I annotated this book. Vonnegut's writing is simple and direct and maybe even a little obvious in this one, but it compounds really nicely here. He does a very thorough job of looking at the world. I do prefer a couple of his more anchored down novels. His novels that are portraits of people like [b:Bluebeard|9601|Bluebeard|Kurt Vonnegut Jr.|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1516339874l/9601._SY75_.jpg|6582745] and [b:Hocus Pocus|9589|Hocus Pocus|Kurt Vonnegut Jr.|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1391684344l/9589._SY75_.jpg|1683551] or sociological portraits like [b:Galapagos|9934441|Galapagos|Kurt Vonnegut Jr.|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1453976557l/9934441._SY75_.jpg|517654].
I most enjoyed the excerpts and summaries of Kilgore Trout's novels, and it makes me wanna read his more sci-fi ish works. [a:George Saunders|8885|George Saunders|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1588859347p2/8885.jpg]' short stories are kinda like Kilgore Trout's it seems.

Too crude and pessimistic for my liking.  With a fair amount of Vonnetgut's wit, makes it a good read but I prefer some of his other titles.

Well...it's truly obvious that Vonnegut is super-smart and savvy regarding human nature, our broken planet, and our broken society, but his constant pessimism and REMINDERS of our broken world through his cynicism, sarcasm and satire were fairly draining to me as a reader. Don't go into it expecting to laugh out loud in a hearty sort of way, but more in a wry, dry, helpless sort of way.

And don't EVER expect Vonnegut to leave you feeling warm and fuzzy all over...And so on.
