Tana French is one of my favorite authors. I read her very slowly and carefully so that I can enjoy every word she puts on the page. I often stop and reread entire passages because of the beauty of her words. That being said, this was not my favorite book from her. I enjoyed the plot but there were some things that I didn't enjoy. I didn't understand the point of the girls having magical powers. This added nothing to the plot. Also, I found some of the dialogue from the girls' perspective a bit off. It was totes annoying and not awesomesauce. I know she was trying to give them teen lingo, but it just didn't work for me. However, I did enjoy the adult characters and the twists that kept me second guessing my prediction. I also loved how she captured teenage friendship and first love.

This is the first full book I've read by Tana French, and I was intrigued and curious after reading several reviews of her work and write ups on her style of writing.

This novel was well laid out, most the characters were strong and well thought out, at times a little to stereotypical. The novel dragged me along I had to see it to the end. I did have issues with Detective Stephen Moran and Detective Antoinette Conway, I felt that they were only two dimensional and the writer only surprised me once with regards to them.

I am only giving this book 3.5 stars, I HATED the ending ... so much so that I was annoyed that I had read the book all together and it took time for me to move on.

My favorite of the Dublin murder squad books so far

Loved it! Loved the insight on teen girl relationships, the relationship between the detectives, and the complexities of a boarding school. Loved to see Mackey back, but as a side character. What a book!

I read this book and The Trespasser in reverse order-- this is the fifth book in the Dublin Murder Squad series and introduces us to the characters Stephen Moran and Antoinette Conway as they work to solve a cold case murder that occurred a year prior at an all girl’s school. Each chapter switches perspectives between Detective Moran and a small clique of girls at the school, which kept me hooked throughout. There’s a magical realism subplot that I found interesting at the beginning, but seemed unnecessary as the story continued. I almost gave this book 3 stars because of this, but enjoyed it enough otherwise to give it 4 stars!

Who killed him? I think I know, but I'm sure I don't care.
