I love a great standalone fantasy novel to recommend to my readers. Sometimes when readers are new to a genre, the idea of diving into a long series or even a short one, can be overwhelming. Having an excellent standalone fantasy to recommend to readers is great, especially when it introduces readers to a heritage they might be unfamiliar with since it is not their own.

Very cute middle grade book steeped in a Mythology I've never come across. Fresh and fun. A bit Cheesy but who doesn't like a solid piece of Gouda every now and again.

I could absolutely see myself reading this book and absolutely loving it as a kid. While I think some of the conflicts could be more developed, I loved reading about the mythology and traditions that are so familiar to me.

This is middle grades fiction at its absolute BEST. This is literature overall at its very best. Roshani Chokshi shines here with a read that is accessible to pre-teens but explores themes of the impact of parents’ deaths, difficult family dynamics, the consequences of colonization…all in the context of Phillipine culture. Beautifully written literature within the confines of the current editorial requirements for middle grades fic which seem to really limit authors’ syntax and vocabulary. This is one I’ll come back to and will recommend everywhere.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC of this novel. 4/5 stars.

I freaking LOVE Rick Riordan Presents novels, and this was no exception. While this is low middle grade (the MC is 12), it deals with grief and trauma and death and there are so many beautiful one-liners and quips from Saso where I didn't want to put this down and also didn't really feel like it was middle grade.

Set in a beautiful, magical landscape of spirits and ghosts, Corozan must find a way to send a spirit back home while also dealing with the death of her parents a few years ago. She's a magical being though, but her magic is locked inside of her and she doesn't know why. She also has her anito, her animal, Saso, who is just an absolute delight. I really loved the mythology and the characters and everything else in this.

I didn't like how it ended though, because it's a standalone but so many things were opened up in the last few pages where I just want....more? I also think some of the timing and the plot was meh, but I also loved this.
