This was enjoyable, I guess.

But I was expecting something much better. I'm... underwhelmed. Ugh. That's the second time I say this about something Erin Watt wrote and I hate doing this. I loved the first three Royals books so freaking much and am so excited about East's story... I really hope I won't be as disappointed with that one as I am now.

Gid was okay and Sav was okay, but... It's like they don't actually have real personalities. And the parts we got of their story were so bland I just couldn't understand why they'd love each other at all. Gid was kind of an ass most of the time when they first got together and Sav was a mindless slave to his wishes, trying to impress him 24/7. So I don't get it.

But the writing was good and there were interesting parts and I laughed a little and her friendship with her sister and two... What, sorority future-sisters(?) was great and blah blah blah.

But I'm still sad about the general thing.

First When it's Real and now this. So disappointing. Dammit, I hope Fallen Heir it's better. I will NOT be happy if East's romance is as "meh" as those.

It was nice getting to know Gideon Royal a bit more. I think him, and the twins were the least developed characters in the series that I've wanted to get to know. It's also nice to get to know Savannah more, because she wasn't that present in [b:Paper Princess|28678119|Paper Princess (The Royals, #1)|Erin Watt|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1476744953s/28678119.jpg|48870448], [b:Broken Prince|29519514|Broken Prince (The Royals, #2)|Erin Watt|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1464248584s/29519514.jpg|49812102], and [b:Twisted Palace|29519517|Twisted Palace (The Royals, #3)|Erin Watt|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1474992523s/29519517.jpg|49812105]. She was probably more talked about, then actually in the books. I also liked seeing their relationship in the beginning, and the present day (although I didn't like the constant flashback technique). What let me down with this book is that I just wanted more. I would have gladly read a full book on their relationship, and seeing how Gideon would have gotten Savannah to forgive him, and then their relationship, and the reaction from the Royal brothers/Ella upon finding out the news that they're back together again. This short story just felt too short, and simplistic, but I consider it a compliment if I wanted more from a story, because it means that I am invested enough to want more. I also got creeped out at every Dinah appearance, and I didn't like the flashbacks because I knew what the end result would be. But overall, it was a nice, short edition to the Royals series, and I hope to see Gideon/Savannah in [b:Fallen Heir|33807229|Fallen Heir (The Royals, #4)|Erin Watt|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1501528398s/33807229.jpg|54711950], and [b:Cracked Kingdom|34705684|Cracked Kingdom (The Royals, #5)|Erin Watt|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/book/50x75-a91bf249278a81aabab721ef782c4a74.png|55885602].

A short story taking place between the last full novel and the next one that is due out in 10 days. It tells the story of the two characters from the series that had a turbulent past and a bad break-up before the events happening in the first book of the series. They were now given the second chance, which, of course, all of us readers wanted in the first place. :) The story changes between past and present day. Given that we all know how it ended in the past, it was hard to read those parts and there were quite a few of them.

I'm happy I got to experience Sav and Gid's story. It cleared up a lot for both of them.
In all the previous books, all we see is Gid brooding. He's always unhappy, nasty, not nice to anyone, even his family. This book sheds a bit of light on that, though I already knew his troubles. I still feel like he doesn't have as much depth as I would like. He's fairly superficial and I'm not sure if I like him or not. I got more out of Sav from this story. Since I didn't really know her much from the previous books, this was a good way to get to know her story and see how she fell for Gideon.
My biggest issue with this story was the time line. I'm not sure it flows as the authors thought it would. In all the previous books I was under the impression that Gid was a Freshman. Reed often talks about him just having left school. I assumed it was the year before. I also assumed Sav was Ella and Easton's age, but it seems she might be Reed's age. If so, the timeline is totally off because she was a sophomore when dating Gid. There are a few other plot holes that bothered me, but they didn't really alter the story so I can give those a pass.
I did see somewhere the authors saying this was for their readers and they did their best to keep the things in line with the story. But I feel like they didn't try hard enough.
Finally, there is one point in the story where a character specifically points out one race for something and I was taken aback by that as it leant zero to the story and was totally unnecessary.
Overall, it was enjoyable enough to get to know these two characters and some of their new friends.
