Daphne du Maurier writes so lovely. She can write such amazing stories filled with strong characters and plot twisting turns. Amazing, please read.
Brilliantly ghastly to the end. Its hard to believe how ahead of her time Du Maurier truly was. A feminist writer whose exciting story that ensures that you come face to face with pure evil. Guaranteed to keep you gipped til the end in the most sickening way.
I think this has become my favourite of hers over Rebecca. READ IT

DNF, but still 3 stars because it did not annoy me to death or something. I just still felt rather meh about the book and the plot after almost half of it. I might read the rest at some point, but at the moment life feels to short for 'meh' books. I should note that the prose and descriptions are super beautiful at times!

This book was a 3.75 for me, this is partly because I went into it thinking I would love it more than I did. I enjoyed reading about Mary and found her and Jem interesting and captivating. The ending of this book was spectacular, I absolutely loved it. It was full of twists and turns and even when the thing I suspected came true, I was still surprised. The ending was so brilliant it is worth reading the book just to get to it.

Absolutely loved this! What a fantastic story and brilliantly written. It took me by surprise. Might have to read another Du Maurier book now. Sad it's finished.

It has been an awfully long time since I picked up a Daphne du Maurier book. The last time and first time was when I read Rebecca as part of my Sixth form Literature course and there I fell in love with her gothic settings and writing style. Finally, about 4 years later, I finally got around to picking up another of her books and it did not disappoint at all.
Jamaica Inn is sent in the Cornish moors. The Inn itself is a described as a foreboding, gloomy location, surrounding my nothingness. It certainly gives a spectacular creepy and gothic feel. Personally I am a huge fan of gothic style literature. I don't like to be frightened, but gothic literature (the good kind) usually comes from 18th/19th century and the old world feel only adds to my love of the age and the mood of the novel.
Loved, loved loved this book! Du Maurier is an incredible author. Not quite as good as Rebecca, but so much love for this novel. Du Maurier just writes gothic, creepy literature so well with a little bit of romance and lots of mystery thrown in!
I definitely recommend!

“She realized for the first time that aversion and attraction ran side by side; that the boundary-line was thin between them.”
Obviously I went into this with too high of expectations, expecting this to be just as spell-binding as [b:Rebecca|17899948|Rebecca|Daphne du Maurier|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1386605169l/17899948._SX50_.jpg|46663]. Daphne du Maurier is still a wonderful writer no matter what and is an absolute queen at creating an atmospheric story but this one didn't quite have a "spark".
Jamaica Inn is set in the Cornish moors (which gives it some [b:Wuthering Heights|6185|Wuthering Heights|Emily Brontë|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1388212715l/6185._SY75_.jpg|1565818] vibes) and there is almost a pirate-y feel to it. The story its self was a little weak in my opinion, it wasn't bad but it was simple and the twists that did come were a bit expected. It felt like just reading an old mystery rather than a work of genius.
Mary Yellan moves to the Jamaica Inn with her aunt and uncle after the death of her mother, and quickly finds it to have some dirty dealings. Mary spends the book trying to figure out how to bring her uncle to justice while keeping everyone safe. There is a bit of romance but it felt very strange.
Overall, I'm still happy I read it, it was entertaining and I love du Maurier's style but this one was just signficantly more SIMPLE than "Rebecca". I am interested to see how the movie(s) compare and to read a few more of her works.
