"Dead men tell no tales." – D.D.M.
I added this to my reading list after studying the opening of the novel with my students and feeling like an imposter when they asked if I'd read it. When I finally got round to it, I was not disappointed!
Normally I don't tend to go for books considered 'old classics', much preferring to read modern dystopias. But du Maurier's smuggling page-turner was really thrilling. I was surprised with how invested I became in the story and how much I rooted for the protagonist. I also didn't know how much of a mystery element there would be in the story which was very gripping and kept me guessing for a while; much like Mary Yellan I was at a loss for whom I could trust.
I'm really pleased I decided to read this and wouldn't thoroughly recommend it to all, even my students! – E.

So I'm a huge Daphne du Maurier fan and I've read Rebecca & My Cousin Rachel and absolutely loved them. Jamaica Inn was however, my least favorite of the three but in no means is it a bad or mediocre book. It just sadly happens to be just a "good" book next to two excellent ones.
Also I happened to watch Jamaica Inn on Netflix right before I read the book and they changed A LOT so that might be influencing my opinion more than slightly.
Overall, a wonderful book and I'll recommend it to everyone!

this was about 4 stars throughout, and then the twist came, and the end section of the book was absolutely incredible. daphne du mauriet is a literature genius.
I was told to expect a brooding Gothic atmosphere and that's exactly what I got, with the central mystery a nice rolling boil underpinning the narrative.
Unfortunately, I saw the fairly recent BBC adaptation which meant that I was spoiled for the Big Twist and this coupled with my lack of investment in the main romance made it a book I liked rather than loved.

Loved it! After reading Rebecca I wanted to see what Du Maurier could do and she did not disappoint. Very excited to read more of her work!
