Compulsively readable and got me out of a bit of a reading funk. Really enjoyed it. Mary is such a great character - she is brave by default and committed to her principles.
I'm not sure how I feel about the ending, but at least it was cliche...

This book was moody and dark. From the opening chapter it felt very heavy and atmospheric. It made me think strongly of some of the Bronte sisters books, Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre, with similar gothic vibes appearing throughout the story. The Inn itself felt like its own character, lurking menacingly in the background. The weather throughout the novel also plays such a big part, creating the tense atmosphere warning you of danger to come.
It really is quite a violent book, which I didn’t expect, especially when I compare it to du Maurier’s other books that I have read. With domestic abuse, murder, torture and smuggling, all held within the pages of the book. The scenes with the wreckers especially was shocking and you learn so much about the evil horrors of that trade, which I did not know of until I read this book.
The male characters featured are all flawed and unlikeable. Mary, the main protagonist was brilliant to read about and she has became one of my new favourite characters! Strong, brave and intelligent. I was constantly holding my breath reading about some of the terrifying circumstances she became involved in.
Jamaica Inn is a suspenseful, blood tingling modern classic that is a gothic thriller filled with mystery, murder and madness.
it's spoOoOoOoky and though I don't think I like it quite as much as Rebecca it's not far behind! and now I want to read more du Maurier.
Oh this book was good <3 Not quite Rebecca, but almost. I loved the feel of it, the mystery the intrigue. I loved the characters. I loved the story. Oh I just loved it. Though, the end I was a little confused by. It was all jumbled. But it was an amazing book.
I really loved the build up, there was everything that makes a good book. It was a beautiful piece of Gothic literature. I love du Maurier's writing, I like how it paces, how it slows right down and then it all happens at once. It kept me guessing throughout.
I think words have failed me now, it was just utterly stunning. If you like Jane Eyre - or at least the feel of Jane Eyre - you'll like it. If you liked Rebecca, you'll like it. If you liked Wuthering Heights - you'll like it. It has everything you want in a book, atmospherics, good characters... It was stunning <3

As always, du Maurier is sublime with atmospherics. What let this lose the 5th star is the plot. There was so much more that she could have achieved with this plot and I feel it was just lacking compared to other books. Had this been set in the 1800s U.S., it would have made a fine western novel. You have the shifty landlord of the inn, who is tied up in a ship wrecking racketeer. There's the horse thieving love interest. The damsel in distress, who happens to be the landlord's wife, and the I-ain't-skurred-of-nuthin' girl, who is the niece of said wife. There's drinking and rabble-rousing and murders and anything else you'd expect in a western, but it's set in southwestern England!

I struggled reading this at first, as the descriptions are so detailed and I never felt the story was going anywhere. The mystery of Jamaica Inn kept me intrigued though, and towards the end of the book I found it harder to put down.
