3.81 AVERAGE

Maybe more like a 3.75.

I definitely did not enjoy this one as well as I did Rebecca. It lacked a lot of the suspense and just generally didn't intrigue me as much. It was good but didn't hit the high notes for me.

I read this for Gothic Fic book club (off GR) and really enjoyed it. It's very of it's time (1930s) in terms of attitudes and snarky humour, some of which I appreciated and some of which I didn't. I almost wish du Maurier hadn't shoehorned a romantic subplot in there, and the ending fell a bit flat for me (we discussed this in book club and I wasn't the only one who felt that way!) ... I do find it interesting how it's marketed or presented as a romance, and some versions emphasise this with the cover over other editions. I wouldn't personally recommend reading it for the romance element, but it's a solid Gothic melodrama with lots of atmosphere.

It must be a long time since I read this as I couldn't remember exactly what happens. Poor Mary Yellan's having a terrible year. Her mother dies, her home is sold, and she has to go and live at Jamaica Inn with feeble aunt Patience and horrible uncle Joss. What's he up to, anyway? Nothing good, for sure. Convincingly windswept, rainy and unpleasant descriptions of Bodmin Moor in the early nineteenth century, plus plenty of traumatic adventures.

The last few chapters go a bit off the rails and the ending doesn't sit quite right with me (although I'm not at all certain it's meant to), but no one can conjure up an atmosphere like Daphne du Maurier. She's a magician.

Wonderfully atmospheric. I brought my copy of Jamaica Inn at the real Jamaica Inn and the amped-up campiness of the current pub did not prepare me for it's literary namesake. What I always forget about Daphne du Maurier's writing is how uncompromising realistic she is, especially when it comes to representing women's lives and motivations. I have no idea how this works alongside the fabulous language and well-handled dramatic set pieces but it really does and I'm still very much in love.
