Marlowe’s wry humor will never cease to make me chuckle… I did figure out parts of this one, but love his method of deduction

Meu primeiro Raymond Chandler. Meu primeiro Philip Marlowe.

Less contemplative and melancholy than my first Chandler, The Long Goodbye (not surprising since it's a decade earlier), The Lady in the Lake also has a lot more black humor and dry wit to it, even as the bodies keep piling up. A lot less psychology (well, beyond "Dames. They'll mess you up,") keeps this from being as enjoyable for me, but the plot holds together tightly and Marlowe is a lot less world-weary and sarcastic, which is less deep but more fun.

This book was just a series of men being aggressive toward the protagonist. Lots of male posturing. But it's interesting to see the origin and gold standard of so many noir tropes, and the twisty-turny plots of mysteries. I also recognize now how many tributes to the old sheriff character I've seen in other pieces of media, which is fun.

Excellent.

I really enjoyed this book and am planning to read some more Chandler in the future.

"However hard I try to be nice I always end up with my nose in the dirt"

The pacing and description within this book are truly incredible, maintaining my engagement through all 266 pages. Chandler had crafted Marlowe to be a wise cracking narrator who manages to lay out all the clues to you until you think you can see the connection only to be hit with the twist that I definitely didn't see coming.

The plot was complicated and yet tied together with enough frequency that you didn't get confused or lost at any point.
Masterful story telling and a genuinely good read, 5 stars!
