Of course this is a 3rd or 4th read. Love to read this in the Summer to feel cooler. What I find interesting is that there was a bad winter in 1942, in North Dakota. I wonder if that area has cycles of really bad winters.
11/23/2020: I read this again for a seasonal challenge (nothing can say winter like this book). Even though I have read this multiple times, certain things stand out, that I didn't remember from the first 5 or 6 times reading the book.
One other thing. I have started reading [b:Prairie Fires: The American Dreams of Laura Ingalls Wilder|33911349|Prairie Fires The American Dreams of Laura Ingalls Wilder|Caroline Fraser|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1499741011l/33911349._SY75_.jpg|54876814], which I think will be interesting.

It must have been hard living in this time with no electricity or modern conviences. But somehow the Ingalls family survives again.

Over the course of a long, hard winter, the Ingallses move into town, where they must endure a barrage of blizzards, dwindling food supplies, and maddeningly dull days.
The sixth book in the Little House series, this book recounts the Ingallses' experiences during the unusually harsh winter 0f 1880-81. A sense of foreboding is established early on and builds in a way that jangles the reader's nerves as much as it does the Ingallses'. Laura begins to take a more adult role in supporting her parents and the household. We also get to properly meet Almanzo here, though he and Laura don't really get acquainted until the next book.
I read this series all the time as a kid, but I will admit I didn't recall much about this story except for the scene where Pa forcibly buys some of Almanzo's seed grain - and apparently with good reason. It was interesting to see all the ways the Ingallses contrived to make do with their dwindling supplies and how they kept their spirits up. But as the days grow slow and dull for Laura, the book slows down too. By the Shores of Silver Lake will keep its crown.

The Long Winter is book 6 in the Little House on the Prairie Series, which follows the story of Laura Ingalls's family (Ma, Pa, Laura, Mary, Carrie, and Grace) as they try their best with almost zero money to start a thriving homestead in what is now the Midwestern USA. The story of the Long Winter is exactly as it sounds. The Ingalls family gets caught in a small town surviving an incredibly harsh, long winter. It is a survival story. The Ingalls story intersects with the Wilder boy's story that is introduced in Farmer Boy (book 2 of this series). The Wilder's get their own chapters which adds to the complexity of what is a rather simple overall plot - try not to die for a few months while blizzard after blizzard hits. The writing in this one is SO dang good, you really feel the way the winter drags on and on and how cold it is. But the story telling is still so interesting and the emotional experience in Laura's mind is compelling. It's a fabulous book that makes you feel grateful for what you have, and speaks to the tenacity of the human spirit in this way that's accessible to children too. I was really impressed by this one and will be re-reading it to the kiddos when they get older.
We purchased the full color collectors edition which is well worth it to keep on the bookshelf, even the little ones can enjoy the pictures while the story is read aloud.
