So, I got this book for free with Amazon prime. I honestly don't know how I feel about it. The story follows 10 women who live in Chile, 9 of which are going to the same counselor (the 10th woman).
While I learned some about growing up in Chile, it honestly came off more as a "complaining about how my life went." Maybe that's wrong of me to take it that way, there are many women who have tragic stories. I just honestly didn't connect with this book like I wanted to.
I honestly didn't have a favorite character. They all just share their stories and then the booknis over. I would have liked to see more interaction between them.
I think the book is fiction, but it feels very nonfiction. For those who don't know a lot about struggles women have faced or do face, this would be a good book to read! Definitely for adults as there is a lot of cursing.

Not so different
Reading authors who are not from North America gives you insight into many differences in our lives, and experiences. Ten Women also allows us to experience our similarities, dreams and emotional travel and realize, we are not so different at all.

This book begins with nine women exiting a van, invited by their therapist, Natasha, the seemingly only common thread amongst these women, other than the fact that they are all Chilean. Each chapter in this book is told by a different woman, as she explains her life, her opinions, and what brought her to Natasha. Each of the narrators and her story is unique, and that is what kept my interest as I was reading the book.
That being said, I was disappointed by the ending. Without spoiling too much of the book, the ending, rather than tying the book together, left me wondering why I had spent the last few days reading this book. While I had enjoyed reading the womens' stories, the ending made me question what exactly was the point of it all.

I thought this title sounded interesting, and it should have been interesting. It was not. It was actually a pretty big waste of time. Nine women who have the same therapist are invited to come together and share their stories with one another. The tenth woman is apparently the therapist herself but she never speaks for herself, in the end, her assistant speaks for her. Which I found confusing. Each woman's story is one very long chapter that is a stream of consciousness. They were not engaging or interesting to read and I have no idea why I kept reading. I think I hoped that the next woman's story would be more interesting. It was not.
In one summary of the book, it is said, "....despite their differences, as the women tell their stories, unlikely bonds are formed, and their lives are transformed...." UM. I'm not sure what book this summary is supposed to belong to but it wasn't this one. There was no follow-up from each woman's story that "unlikely bonds" were formed as a result of their stories and there was no transformation detailed. Each rambling chapter just ended with the woman's story and the next chapter kicked off the next woman's.
The one-star rating is for the work the translator did. What a disappointment.

Hermoso libro. Sin duda quiero seguir leyendo a Serrano. Me encantó la forma de contar cada historia, con una voz propia y única en cada mujer. Amé el relato de Simona, me identifiqué mucho con ella.

This book was meh for me. I found the stories so heartbreaking. It’s not really a book I would seek as an escape. I don’t feel it was a book that really taught me anything either. I love the idea of all the vignettes eventually coming together, but I get it fell a little flat. Maybe something was lost in translation

The stories could have been told in a much more compelling way. The narrators didn’t have distinct voices.
