I’ve had this book for a while and never read it. I wish I did when season 6 was more fresh in mind.

It’s really good. I wish it was an episode. It opens up a whole new, unexplored world of lore.

The trouble was that Castiel said he couldn’t get involved because of the monsters in this book being part of a different religious system. That was annoying because in season 5 we’d seen Lucifer killing gods of other religions and the boys are always doing it.

Still it was a good read!

I was really close to giving this one 5 stars (and might still change my mind). Not that it is that great, but probably the best SPN book so far. It took a little bit for the story to find its legs but by half-way through, it was quite riveting. This is definitely Dean's story, mainly because Sam is still soulless. If you're wondering, it takes place after the season 6 episode Caged Heat.) Sam gets his moments in the spotlight but not as many. Xochi gets more attention than she would in an episode but not as much as some of the other books which relegated Sam and Dean to peripheral roles. Cas makes a cameo and Bobby has a role to play as well. Some of the plot elements seemed awkward in that they didn't contribute to the end, other than demonstrating Dean's devotion to Sammy. But those were also brief and intriguing so they weren't total wastes. If you aren't into the SPN universe, this might take some extra effort to follow but I highly recommend it to fans of the show.

definitely one of the better supernatural based books, but I really don't feel like any of the writers really got the relationship between Sam and Dean to translate to page. I don't feel as if the characters from the show are the same from the book. good book overall though

It has been one of the best Supernatural books I've read so far. Not only because the characters are very well portrayed, but because the plot is actually interesting. Aztec gods? Come on! After all the judeo-christian lore, that's a breath of fresh air.

Soulless!Sam seems a little bit soulful sometimes, but I get that it might be difficult to write a character like that. Dean, on the other hand is fantastic: his regrets for leaving Lisa, him missing here, drowning in alcohol to forget. I was a serious Dean/Lisa fan, and after reading "One Year Gone" I believe that Lisa deserves so much credit. She didn't have to put up with the kind of person Dean was when Sam fell into the pit, but she did nevertheless. So yay for all the Dean/Lisa feels. Plus, we get a glimpse of good ole flirty Dean.

Xochi is another hell of a character. Some say that she's verging on the MarySue side, but honestly, take a look at our boys: resourceful, skilled fighters, one is the vessel for fraking Lucifer, the other has been torturing souls in Hell and has died countless times. Seriously, you can't take a female character who is just as badass but comes form a different tradition? Shame on you! I liked her and her chemistry with Dean. Honestly, they left me sexually frustrated.

Soooo, yeah. A very good and entertaining read. Will probably reread.

P.S: Bonus points for the old lady who gets to see Dean naked as a baby. The cut was on his hand, but any excuse is good to get a glimpse of the Winchester goods.

The most un-canon story I’ve ever read

Some of the Supernatural novels are good, others not so great, this one sucks. The author did not understand the characters at all. Skip this one.

These books are usually a hit or a miss with me.
This one was a big miss.
I just don't think hugely epic stories work for these tie-ins. It's never believable. The plot of this one was super interesting, but it didn't feel very Supernatural. It bent canon too much.
The characters were off, as well. Coyote's Kiss takes place during the Soulless Sam days, which is.... a choice. We don't even get Sam's PoV, just Dean and Xochi's. Dean was okay, but Xochi was meant to be written as a female Dean but came off as more of a weak parody. The worst was Cass' short appearance, which was completely out of character. That point was where the book started going downhill for me.
Add in way, way too many sex jokes (I know this is Supernatural, but come on!) and a lot threats/acts of rape and you've got a tie-in that just doesn't work. It's not a fun addition to the Supernatural canon, it's just a mess.
Here's hoping the next one is better!
