I would like to have given it three stars for its setting in lovely Provence. But the editing was very poor-- that third star is hereby retracted.

Nice little mystery that is the first in a series featuring Verlaque, the chief magistrate, and Marine Bonnett, his ex-girlfriend and professor. When a childhood friend of Marine's dies under mysterious circumstances, Verlaque requests her help in getting a better understanding of the family. Verlaque is a bit of an ass which makes it more satisfying when things don't always go his way. I enjoyed the supporting characters quite a bit and do look forward to reading more some day in the series.

A light novel perfect for me to read on holiday. While the plot is at times formulaic and predictable it paints a beautiful picture of France and allows the reader some escapism into the landscape of Summer in Aix

Antoine Verlaque is a judge in Aix, France. His former lover Marine Bonnet is a law professor. It’s been six months since the breakup but there is a strong connection still.

Verlaque is assigned to investigate the suspicious death of a nobleman who fell from the attic of his chateau. Marine happened to know the deceased well as they were childhood friends. So he consults with her and eventually she becomes an adjunct investigative assistant.

Of course the cuisine and landscape of Southern France is enmeshed into the storytelling. We learn much about the Corsican mafia and the Russian mob and billionaires. But it’s an almost biblical tale of two brothers who were wrongly perceived by others. Looking forward to the next tale.

I read this on the recommendation of a friend. Verlaque has as much charm as an ash from one of his expensive cigars. He prides himself on being a snob and irresistible to women - once he fixes his “stare” the most beautiful women will run to him and bask in his presence while he rubs his fat stomach in contentment. The story was lame and loose with facts. In the version that I read, Verlaque stated on page 175 that “ Czar Nicholas’s widow, Alexandra, was among the first wave of Russians to discover the Côte d’Azur” Huh? Bonnet then mentioned that she hated when he thought he was the only one who knew history. Did Alexandra survive her assassination and move to France?? That is a true Spoiler.
