I'm not sure what to think about this. The reviews were almost universal raves, but my reaction was the opposite.
I found this to be very slow-paced. I was bored with this town and its people from the first page [or rather word, as I had this as an audiobook from my library]. There was just nothing about this book that engaged me or drew me in.
I got through a bit more than an hour of listening to the full 8 hour audiobook, and I really wasn't into this story at all. So I'm moving on.

Not my favourite read. This was for the READ A BOOK BY AN AUTHOR WITH THE SAME INITIALS AS YOU: TORONTO PUBLIC LIBRARY reading challenge 2019.
As fun as I remembered. I still love Wiggins to pieces. The whole old English inn obsession of Grimes, I find it delightful. This is cozy English mystery gold. Jury is fun as the lead and Melrose is excentric enough to be a good side kick along side sergent Wiggins. The secondary characters are define with broad strokes but some are just too cute (I'm thinking of the twins here). Light but delightful reading, a solid 3 1/2 stars.

A re-read, for a challenge, of one of my favorite mystery writers, Martha Grimes. This first one is one of the best. Has a couple of side mysteries, resolved as well as the primary. Very cozy read, to me anyway. Love the Inn names.
I liked this book. I found it interesting and fun. There were a lot of characters to get mixed up but in the end I didn't mind. I enjoyed the delightful ineptness of Lady Andry and the clever ex-Lord Plant. I loved the charactization of Inspector Jury. All in all I thought it was a great, quick, cozy read.
I wanted more from this one. It took a while to warm to the characters. I didn't really feel strongly about them until near the end. But I did like them so much by that point that I might try another in the series. I just loved Adam Dagliesh of J.D. James' novels so quickly that I wanted Richard Jury and Melrose Plant to do the same.
Mystery was decent.

I enjoyed listening to this book. The characters are well rounded and the story kept me interested, guessing and in some cases laughing!

I remember reading this series 20 years ago and loving it, but not finishing it. So I decided I would give it a go several years afterward and read it all, but that first novel... it fell flat. I found the characteres and situations charicaturedn like the author wanted absolutely to write a British whodunit and used every cliché available.
It's readable, though. I'll re-read the next in the series and decide if I continue it or not...
One good point : the anecdotes about the names of British pubs, entertaining !
